HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Wofford women's golf team sits in sixth place but is just two shots off the lead after the opening round of the Low Country Intercollegiate on Saturday. The two day, 36-hole event, hosted by Wofford and held at Moss Creek Golf Club, concludes Sunday. Moss Creek, a par 72 course, plays 5,922 yards and proved tough on Saturday. Seventeen teams are competing in the field.
"We are in the hunt, which is certainly a good thing," said head coach
Angie Ridgeway.
Dalton State leads the field through the first day of competition. The Roadrunners shot 31 over par on Saturday and hold a one shot lead over High Point, Seton Hall, Quinnipiac, and USC Upstate who are all tied for second. Wofford is two shots back after carding a team score of 321, 33 over par.
Freshman
Grace Massengill and senior
Katy Funk led Wofford on Saturday, both recording rounds of 77. Massengill, playing in the top spot in the lineup, led Wofford in birdies with three and led the entire field in par five scoring (-1). Massengill and Funk are two of five girls tied for fourth place, four shots behind Celia Mansour of Presbyterian College who holds the individual lead.
Madison Barnett, playing in the third spot, shot 83 (+11) in Saturday's round. Barnett, the second freshman in the Wofford lineup, is tied for 41
st place.
Nicole Chin is tied for 52
nd place after carding an opening round 84.
Lela Oakley, playing in the fifth spot in the lineup, shot 89 (+17) and was Wofford's non-counter of the round.
"We had solid play in tricky wind today from
Grace Massengill and
Katy Funk," said Ridgeway.
Wofford was fourth among all teams in par three scoring, ninth in par four scoring and third in par five scoring. The Terriers were sixth with five birdies and fifth with 40 pars.
