Terriers Finish Sixth at Low Country

Terriers Finish Sixth at Low Country Intercollegiate
Two Terriers Finish Top-10 Individually

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Wofford women's golf team shot 329 in Sunday's second and final round of the ninth annual Low Country Intercollegiate. Wofford, the host school, shot 321 in Saturday's opening round and the two day team total of 650 placed the Terriers in a tie for sixth place. Dalton State also shot 650 for the tournament as the two teams shot 74 over par on the par 72 Moss Creek Golf Club. The sixth place finish was the second best of the season for Angie Ridgeway's team as Wofford finishes fifth in the Terrier Intercollegiate in October.

High Point took home the team championship, finishing with a two-day total of 638 (+62). The Panthers, who were one of four teams that were one stroke back of Dalton State after Saturday's opening round, finished with a three shot lead over Gardner-Webb (641, +65). Seton Hall shot +68 for the tournament and finished in third place.

Presbyterian College's Celia Mansour led after both rounds of the tournament and took home the individual championship. Mansour shot 73 and 77 in the two rounds and her six over par score of 150 was five strokes better than Sammie Staudt of Seton Hall who took home runner-up honors. Mansour led in par four scoring as she shot even par on the par fours and recorded 10 pars over the course of the tournament.

For the second straight day, the course proved tough. There was not one round under par in the tournament, as windy conditions, tough pin placement and fast greens proved the difference.

For Wofford, Katy Funk and Grace Massengill led the way for the second straight day as the pair both recorded top-10 finishes in the field of 93. Funk, a senior, and Massengill, a freshman, both had solid rounds of 77 on Saturday. On Sunday, Funk shot 81 to finish +14 (158), good enough to tie for sixth place. The sixth place finish ties her best finish of the season as she also finished sixth at the Bill Berg Invitational in October.

Massengill was right behind her teammate after carding an 82 on Sunday to finish +15 (159). The Hickory, N.C. native was one of five players to finish in a tie for eighth place. The eighth place finish is the second best of the season for Massengill, who recorded a seventh place finish at the Bill Berg Invitational in the fall.

Madison Barnett was Wofford's third best golfer of the tournament. The freshman had rounds of 83, 83 to finish +22 with a score of 166. Barnett (10) was one of 15 golfers in the field to finish with 10 pars or more on the weekend. The native of Mableton, Ga. finished tied for 39th.  After shooting 84 in Saturday's round, Nicole Chin improved a stroke on Sunday. The junior carded an 83 to finish with a score of 167 (+23) and tie for 47th place. Lela Oakley shot 89-89 in the tournament and finished in 79th place.

Wofford has one final tournament of the spring before competing in the Southern Conference Championship. The Terriers head to Morganton, N.C. to compete in the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate, hosted by Appalachian State, April 2-3. The Southern Conference Championship is April 23-25 at the Country Club of Lexington in Lexington, S.C.
