Men’s Golf Records Fifth Place Finish, Novak Ties for Runner-Up

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford men's golf team shot 861, three under par on the par 72 Furman Golf Club, good enough for fifth place in the field of 21 teams at the Furman Intercollegiate held Friday through Sunday. Wofford senior Andrew Novak finished as co-runner up out of 128 players in the field.

Novak's best round of the season, a 68 in the second round of the Kiawah Classic in the fall, was broken twice in the tournament. Novak shot 67 (-5) in Friday's opening round, the third best round among all competitors. In Saturday's round, the native of Mt. Pleasant shot a 66 and recorded the lowest round of the day to take hold of the individual lead through two rounds. Novak was -11 through two rounds and held a four shot lead over Brett Baron of Georgia Southern and Kendrick Vinar of Harvard.

In Sunday's final round, Novak carded birdies on two of the first three holes but then bogeyed three in a row. He got back in a rhythm and parred the next seven holes. The 17th hole proved to be trouble Novak double bogeyed the par four but rebounded to shoot birdie, par, birdie, par on the final four holes and finished one shot behind Carson Young of Clemson. Novak led the field with 18 birdies.

Novak has finished in the top 10 in all eight of Wofford's tournaments this season, including two wins. The 10 under par finish ties for the second best tournament finish in relation to par for a Wofford player, though Novak holds the lead in that category with a -13 performance at last year's Wofford Invitational. The top five finish was Novak's fifth of the season and the 11th of his career, tying Neil O'Briain for most top five finishes in Wofford history.

Jeremy Grab was Wofford's second best golfer of the tournament. Grab opened with a one over par 73 on Friday. The senior shot 76 on Saturday but rebounded to shoot four under par 68 on Sunday, Wofford's best round of the day and tying for the third best round on the course in the final round.  Grab finished tied for 34th with a three day score of 217 and led the field with 40 pars.

Evan Grenus was consistent in the No. 3 spot in the lineup for the Terriers. Grenus shot 73, 72, and 75 in the three rounds, respectively, to finish the tournament at four over par. Harrison Frye, playing in the No. 4 spot, was also consistent. The junior shot 76, 75, 75 to finish 10 over par.

Drake Cassidy shot an impressive four under par 68 in the first round but struggled in the next two, shooting 79 Saturday and 83 on Sunday.

Wofford shot 281, 289 and 291 in the three rounds to finish fifth. Georgia Southern and Chattanooga tied for third with a three day total of 855. USC Aiken shot 849 as a team to record a runner up finish. Clemson shot 835 as a team and won the tournament but 14 strokes.

Vic Lipscomb's team enjoys a week off before hosting the Wofford Invitational April 3-4 at The Country Club of Spartanburg.
