Men's Basketball Releases 2017-18 Schedule

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford men's basketball coach Mike Young has announced the schedule for the 2017-18 season. The Terriers will play a 31 game schedule, hosting 16 contests. Wofford will play 18 Southern Conference games, nine in the new Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

"Needless to say, it is exciting to think that we will be in the facility soon," said head coach Mike Young, who enters his 16th season leading the Terriers. "To watch it come out of the ground and admire the thought and work that has gone into such a world-class facility, has been fun, but I am ready for it to open and see our players enjoy it as they get back to campus this week."

Five power conference opponents, seven home games, three regional games as part of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, as well as an invitation to the Mountain Classic summarize the Terrier's competitive, non-conference schedule.

"This year's non-conference schedule will absolutely prepare us for the always challenging Southern Conference slate," said Young. "We always try to play a tough out of league schedule, and this year is no exception. We travel to play some elite Power Five opponents, but to think we have the likes of South Carolina, Georgia Tech and Harvard coming here, where we have historically been tough to beat, is really exciting."

Wofford opens the season and the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Friday, Nov. 10 against Final Four participant South Carolina. Two days later, the Terriers welcome Washington & Lee to Spartanburg for a Sunday contest which is part of the regional games for the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

"Playing the Gamecocks in here on opening night will be one of those occasions that will be unforgettable for each of us," Young added. "Coach Martin has built a program to last and to have them here on opening night will be awesome."

The third game of the season sends the Terriers to the west coast for a showdown with California on Thursday, Nov. 16.  The meeting is the first between the programs and is part of the regional games of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

"Hosting the mainland portion of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational will be good for our program," noted Young.

Wofford returns home to host two regional games of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. On Saturday, Nov. 18, Wofford plays Bob Jones and the Terriers square off with North Florida on Sunday. Mount St. Mary's and North Florida play in Spartanburg Saturday night and Mount St. Mary's and York College meet on Tuesday, Nov. 21 in Maryland.

The following Wednesday, Nov. 22, Wofford faces Big12 opponent Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. The meeting between the Terriers and Red Raiders will be the first between the two programs and the last game for Wofford until after the Thanksgiving break.

Following the break, Wofford heads on the road for two contests before returning to Richardson Indoor for two home games. On Sunday, Nov. 26 Wofford plays at UNC Asheville and on Wednesday, Nov. 29 the Terriers head back to Myrtle Beach for the second year to take on Coastal Carolina.

Wofford's final two games before exam week are at home. After the Terriers traveled to Atlanta last season, Georgia Tech makes the trip to Spartanburg for a game on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Johnson & Wales visits Spartanburg for a Dec. 9 game before Wofford breaks for 11 days for exams.

Wofford is back on the court on December 17th against High Point in the Mountain Classic, held at the US Cellular Center in Asheville. UNC Asheville and Western Carolina will square off in the other matchup.

"It'll be nice to play a game in the US Cellular Center before heading there for the conference tournament in March," said Young. "Our freshmen will get a feel for the arena and hopefully it feels comfortable to all of the guys when we return months later."

Three days later on December 20th the Terriers face the defending National Champions in Chapel Hill for the final non-conference game before winter break.  "Traveling to Chapel Hill to face the defending National Champion Tar Heels will be memorable for our club," said Young.

"Overall, I'm looking forward to our non-conference. We will get to hit the road to play a couple of programs we have never competed against in Cal and Texas Tech. UNC Asheville, Coastal Carolina and High Point are very good, well coached, traditionally strong programs that will give us an indication of where we are in our development during November and December," Young added.

UNCG is Wofford's first conference opponent as teams square off December 30th in Greensboro. Between Jan. 4th and Jan 13th Wofford hosts VMI (Jan. 4), The Citadel (Jan. 6), Harvard for a non-conference battle (Jan. 10) and Furman (Jan. 13).
Wofford plays at Samford (Jan. 18), hosts Chattanooga (Jan. 20), and travels to VMI (Jan .24) before returning home for two consecutive games against ETSU (Jan. 27) and Western Carolina (Jan. 29).

The Terriers travel to The Citadel (Feb. 1) and Mercer (Feb. 3) in road swing before hosting Samford on Feb. 7. Wofford's longest conference road trip of the season starts with a Feb. 10th game at Furman and continues at Western Carolina (Feb. 15) before coming to a close at Chattanooga (Feb. 17).

Wofford's final three games of the regular season are at home against UNCG Greensboro (Feb. 20), at ETSU (Feb. 23) and against Mercer for senior night on Feb. 25.

The 2018 Southern Conference Tournament will take place March 1-5 in Asheville, N.C. The winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
