ERIE, Colo. – The Wofford men's golf team recorded a 20
th place finish at the Mark Simpson Invitational. The two-day, 54 hole tournament, hosted by the University of Colorado, concluded Tuesday. The tournament was played at Colorado National Golf Club and included 20 teams.
"I am a little disappointed in today's performance, but I thought we battled hard in the two rounds yesterday and I'm proud of that," said head coach
Alex Hamilton. "We had a good chance to still finish in the top 10 coming into today, but we didn't have a great day today. We have to learn from this week and get better each week. This team has talent, but we have to develop our identity."
Wofford shot 887 (+23) as a team for the tournament. The Terriers shot 294 in Monday's first round and improved by seven strokes in the second 18 of the day to shoot 287. In Tuesday's third and final round, Wofford shot 306 overall.
Utah won the tournament, shooting 22 under par as a team. Colorado was the runner-up, and Wyoming, UC Riverside, and Oregon State rounded out the top five.
Walker Simas was Wofford's top golfer in the event. The sophomore shot 71, 70, and 76 in the three rounds, respectively. His second round 70 was the second best round of the tournament for the Terriers. He finished one over for the tournament with a total score of 217. His performance was good enough to tie him for 34
th place, the second best finish in his young career.
Drake Cassidy, one of two seniors in Wofford's lineup, had the second best showing. Cassidy shot 73 in the first round, tying his third best collegiate round. He finished with two rounds of 75 to shoot 223, nine over par, and tie for 68
th.
Freshman
Nick Willis, playing in his first collegiate event, also tied for 68
th. The native of Cowpens shot 75 in his first round, then improved six shots in his second round to shoot a three under par 69, Wofford's best round of the tournament. He shot 79 in Tuesday's round to shot 223 (+9) for the tournament. His score counted all three rounds for the Terriers.
Evan Grenus shot 75, 76, 76 in his three rounds to shoot 227.
Ryan Marter, the second Wofford freshman in the lineup, shot 78, 73, 83 in his first collegiate event.
The team has a quick turnaround. Wofford returns to the course Oct. 2-3 as part of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
"I'm looking forward to the quick turnaround and our trip to compete in Raleigh," said Hamilton. "We will have the week to work on some things and hopefully we play significantly better next week."
