AIKEN, S.C. – The Wofford men's golf team tied for 10
th at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54 hole tournament, held at the par 70 Palmetto Golf Club, included 18 teams. The 10
th place finish is the best this season for the Terriers.
Teams played 36 holes on Monday and a final 18 on a rainy Tuesday. On Monday, Wofford shot 292 in the first round and improved nine shots in the second 18 of the day, turning in a team score of 305. The total score of 880 (+40) tied for 10
th in the field.
Sophomore
Walker Simas led the Terriers with a total score of 219 (+9). Simas shot consistent rounds of 72, 73, and 74 and tied for 33
rd.
Ryan Marter tied for 38
th at +9. The freshman shot a two-over 72 in the first round and shot an even par 70 in the second round. Marter shot 78 in the final round.
Evan Grenus, one of two seniors in the lineup, opened with a 76 and rebounded to shoot a 71 in the second round, tying a season low. Grenus shot a 74 in Tuesday's round and his total score of 221 (+11), tied for 44
th.
Nick Willis, the second freshman in Wofford's lineup, also finished +11 with a score of 221 and tied for 44
th. Willis shot a 73 to open play and then carded a 69 in the second round, the team's best round of the tournament. The round of 69 also tied for Willis's career best. He shot 79 in the final round.
Patrick Bridges, a senior, had rounds of 75, 78 and 79 and finished +22.
Virginia shot even par to win the tournament, nine shots ahead of runner-up Georgia Southern. Daniel Overas of Coastal Carolina beat Georgia Southern's Jake Storey in a playoff for the individual title.
Next up, the Terriers take part in the Southern Intercollegiate, held March 12 at Athens Country Club.
