SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's golf team took home runner-up honors at the Wofford Invitational. The two day, 54 hole tournament, hosted at the Country Club of Spartanburg, concluded Tuesday. This year's event included nine teams.
The second place finish is Wofford's best since 2016 and ties for the best finish by a Wofford team in the tournament as the Terriers have finished as the runner-up five times in the 30 year history of the tournament. Five Terriers either set or tied new career bests in the event.
Wofford held a three shot lead over Army after the opening 36 holes on Monday, thanks to a 276 team score in the second round, Wofford's best since 2015. However, the Terriers shot 294 (+6) as a team in the final round, while ETSU stormed up the leaderboard to take the win. The Bucs shot 276 (-12) in the third round to finish 21 under par, 13 shots ahead of the Terriers.
"I'm proud of our effort this week, said first year head coach
Alex Hamilton. "The guys fought hard. Unfortunately our putts did not fall today, but it was overall our best week by far."
Austin Peay finished third, two shots back of Wofford at six under. Army finished fourth while Charleston Southern and Appalachian State tied for fifth.
Freshman
Nick Willis was the top Terrier in the event. The native of nearby Cowpens tied for sixth with a total score of 212 (-4). Willis opened with a 71 and fired a 68 in the second round, a collegiate best, and was tied for third entering the final round. He shot 73, one over par, in the final round.
Evan Grenus was the second Terrier in the top 10. The senior, too, opened with a 71 and followed with a 68, his best round this season. He shot a 74 in the final round and finished 10
th at three under par in his final home tournament.
Walker Simas tied for 13
th. The sophomore shot 72, 69, and 74 in his three rounds and finished one under the par, the third Terrier in the lineup to finish under par. The second round 69 was a new career low for Simas.
Patrick Bridges finished 29
th at five over par. Bridges, a senior, opened with a 72, his best round. He followed with a 75 and 74 in his second and third rounds, respectively.
Harrison Frye finished nine over par with a score of 225. Frye opened with an 81 before improved 10 shots to shoot a 71 in the second round, tying his career low. He shot a one over par 73 in the final round.
Henry Augenstein and
Patrick Talledo were Wofford's top individuals in the tournament. Each finished at two over par and tied for 18th. Augenstein, a freshman, opened with a two under par 70 and shot an even par 72 in the second round. He finished with a 76 to tally a total score of 218 in his first collegiate appearance. Talledo, a junior, shot even par in each of the first two rounds, new career lows. He closed with a 74 to finish two over.
Drake Cassidy and
Matt Teaster tied for 30
th at six over par. Cassidy, a senior, shot 75, 73, and 74 in his three rounds while Teaster, a freshman, opened with a 78 before rebounding to card an even par 72 in the next two rounds.
Ole Martin Davanger tied for 43
rd with rounds of 77, 73, and 76 (+10).
Will Sawyer finished 51
st. The senior shot 81 in his first round, 73 in the second round and 76 in Tuesday's final round.
Devin McGillan shot 80, 83 and 89 in his three rounds.
Next up, Wofford heads to the Clemson Invitational April 13-15. The tournament, Wofford's final tournament of the regular season, is held at the Cliffs at Keowee Falls. The Southern Conference tournament is slated for April 22-24 at Pinehurst No. 9.
"I'm extremely encouraged heading in to our tournaments at Clemson and the SoCon Championship," said Hamilton.
