SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's golf team shot a season best 276 (-12) in the second round of the Wofford Invitational and the Terriers hold a three shot lead over Army heading into Tuesday's final round. The nine teams in the field played 36 holes on a cold, dreary Monday at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
Wofford shot 286 in the first 18 of the day, the third best round of the season for the Terriers, and were tied for second. But, Wofford improved by 10 shots in the second round to finish the 36 hole day with a score of 562, 14 under par.
The second round 276 ties for the sixth best round in the tournament's history and is the best by a Wofford team in the 30
th year of the tournament. It was Wofford's best round as a team since the Terriers also posted a 276 at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate on Nov. 1, 2015. Wofford's 36 hole score of 562 is tied for the seventh best in the history of the Wofford Invitational, as well.
"I'm very proud of our guys today," said first year head coach
Alex Hamilton. "These were two of our better rounds all year with this afternoon's second round being one heck of a round. The guys stayed aggressive all day and finished strong. We played our last 30 holes 22 under par so it was extremely fun to watch. Now, we have to put that behind us and go focus on tomorrow. Hopefully we can continue our good play."
Nick Willis and
Evan Grenus were the top Terriers on the day. Both are tied for third at five under par. Willis, a freshman, and Grenus, a senior, shot identical rounds of 71 and 68, respectively.
Walker Simas sits in ninth place individually. The sophomore shot even par 72 in the opening round but improved three shots to card a 69 in the second round.
Patrick Bridges is tied for 30
th after rounds of 72 and 75.
Harrison Frye shot an 81 in the first round and his score didn't count towards the team total. However, the senior rebounded to shoot 10 shots better and posted a second round 71, one under par. He is eight over for the tournament and tied for 44th in the field of 57.
Eight Wofford players also took to the course as individuals.
Henry Augenstein, playing in his first collegiate tournament, was the top individual of the 12 in the field. The freshman shot 70 and 72 and is tied for 10
th.
Patrick Talledo, a junior, shot an even par 72 in both rounds and set a new career best. He is tied for 19
th.
Drake Cassidy is tied for 35
th (+4) after rounds of 75 and 73. Freshman
Matt Teaster, playing in his first collegiate event, and junior
Ole Martin Davanger are tied for 40
th at six over. Teaster opened with a 78 and improved six shots to card a 72 in the second 18. Martin Davanger shot 77and 73 in his two rounds.
Will Sawyer is tied for 49
th. The senior shot 81 in the first round then shot a 73 in the second round.
Devin McGillan shot 80 and 83 in his two rounds.
Teams will tee off at 9 AM on Tuesday in a shotgun start.
