Michael Campbell was 5-for-5, including three home runs, to go with a career-high six RBI as No. 4 South Carolina defeated Wofford, 12-1, tonight in Spartanburg, S.C., in the dedication game of Russell C. King Field.
Russell C. King, a 1956 Wofford graduate and former Terrier baseball player, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. The facility is named in his honor after his commitment in excess of $1 million made it possible for Wofford to play its home games on campus for the first time since 1995. Tonight's contest was played before a season-high crowd of 2,486.
Campbell's first homer of the game, a solo shot with one out in the second inning, gave South Carolina a 1-0 lead.
Back-to-back home runs by Brendan Winn, a two-run shot, and Campbell in the third extended the Gamecocks' lead to 4-0. It was the seventh home run of the season for Winn.
A Zach Pittman run-scoring double, his second hit of the game, in the bottom of the third cut the Terrier deficit to 4-1. It put runners on second and third with no outs. However, South Carolina starter Zac McCamie (2-0) escaped further damage by inducing a pop to second and a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
McCamie allowed one run on five hits while striking out eight and walking one in seven innings.
A two-run single by Hank Parks in the fifth inning gave South Carolina a 6-1 lead.
Campbell's third homer of the game and eighth of the season was a three-run shot in the seventh to put the Gamecocks on top 9-1.
Terrier starter Chris Clark (1-1) struck out five batters in six innings.
Wofford continues its homestand Friday when it hosts The Citadel at 6 p.m. The Terriers and Bulldogs will also meet in 1:30 p.m. single games Saturday and Sunday.
