WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- Sophomore Terrier Erin Wells shot even par Sunday to lead an overall 11-stroke improvement by the Wofford women’s golf team at the Great Smokies Women’s Collegiate at the Waynesville Country Club in Waynesville, N.C.
Wells finished tied for 38th after tallying a 9-over par 81-72--153. She finished one shot behind classmate Colleen Rice, who tied for 32nd after a 75-77--152 (+8).
Senior Laura Parris carded a 64th-place tying 78-79--157 (+13).
Although Wells improved her score by nine strokes, it did not top the 12-shot upgrade by freshman Ellen Kvarby. The Stockholm, Sweden, native posted a 90-78--168 (+24) to tie for 100th.
Also tying for 100th was fellow rookie Shelly McLaughlin, who was playing in her first collegiate tournament. McLaughlin registered an 83-85--168 (+24).
The Terriers notched a 317-306--623 (+47) to finish 17th in the team standings.
Host Western Carolina won the team title with a 10-over par 292-294--586, one stroke ahead of East Tennessee State.
Austin Peay State’s Staci Lynch was the individual medalist with a 4-under par 71-69--140.
Wofford will next compete at the Lady Paladin Invitational, Oct. 6-8, at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
