Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- After splitting the first two games, visiting Elon captured wins in the next two to garner a 3-1 Southern Conference volleyball victory over Wofford Saturday evening inside the Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C. The Phoenix won the match by scores of 30-28, 24-30, 30-27 and 30-23.
Game one featured a competitive battle after the Terriers jumped out to an early 5-1 on a pair of kills from freshman Stacy Byrd. Elon (15-13, 9-5 SoCon) would battle back and force the score to be knotted at 9-9 before they claimed their first lead, 11-10, since an early 1-0 edge. Neither team had more than a two-point advantage until Shanna Hughes put Wofford up 20-17 forcing the Phoenix to call a timeout.
Sarah Schermerhorn would tie the game again at 24 apiece and Britany Westphal followed with another kill leading to a Terrier timeout with Elon in front, 25-24. The teams traded points before Schermerhorn closed the game with a kill on a Natalie Moore assist for the game victory.
In game two, Wofford (9-17, 2-11 SoCon) found itself trailing 10-7 when Liz Sheets teamed with Joanna Suddath for a block. Sheets then proceeded to get the next kill as part of a 5-0 Terrier run to put the hosts ahead 12-10. Wofford's advantage would grow to as high as six, 20-14, following an attacking error by the Phoenix. Another error by Elon pushed the lead to seven, forcing another timeout, before Sheets tallied a service ace to give Wofford a eight-point cushion at 26-18. The Terriers held off kills by Emily Lucci and Westphal to earn their only game win.
Game three was another competitive contest which featured 12 ties. Freshman Anna Gustafson forced a 17-17 deadlock on a kill but a block by Elon's Natalie Moore and Lucci started a 6-0 spurt by the Phoenix for a 23-17 lead. Wofford fought back to tie the game one last time at 27-27 on an attacking error by Elon, but the Phoenix capitalized on a pair of attacking errors by the Terriers to clinch the game triumph.
Elon would then take an early lead in game four and never looked back. The Phoenix lead grew to as much as seven on three instances, the last at 22-15, following a Wofford service error. Elon continued to increase its margin to nine, 28-19, on a service ace and withstood a late Terrier attempted comeback to record the game and match win.
Westphal led all players, and a quartet of Elon attackers, with 19 kills on 44 total attacks. Lucci finished with a team-best .324 hitting percentage courtesy of 15 kills and 34 total attacks with just four errors. Lauren Copenhagen ended the night with 11 kills, while Schermerhorn finished with 10.
Kelley Blakewood had a match-high 25 digs, while Natalie Moore registered a match-best 48 assists.
Byrd was the top Terrier offensive force with 15 kills on 51 attacks. Hughes paced Wofford with 54 total attacks, which featured 11 kills. Suddath with her .368 hitting percentage led the Terriers, in addition to her 20 digs and 36 assists. Carolyn Rivers also had 20 digs on the defensive end.
Wofford will return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday when it welcomes UNC Greensboro to the Benjamin Johnson Arena for another Southern Conference match.
