Volleyball falls in tough battle to Chattanooga, 3-2

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford volleyball fell 3-2 to SoCon foe Chattanooga Sunday afternoon in Benjamin Johnson Arena. The win takes the Lady Mocs’ season record to 10-8 overall and 5-1 in league play, while the Terriers’ season marks fall to 7-12 overall and 1-6 in the SoCon.

Chattanooga defeated Wofford in game one 30-21 before the Terriers came back to win games two and three 30-22 and 32-30.

The Lady Mocs dominated game four and won 30-19, and then claimed the match victory in a competitive game five by a 16-14score.

Chattanooga senior Leslee Ball’s offensive performance keyed the match as she collected 17 kills and 49 total attacks. Classmate Jamie Engel followed by gathering nine kills and 42 total attacks. Junior Michaela Huff led the Lady Mocs with a .333 hitting percentage. Senior Bethany Herndon collected 44 assists to lead the visitors.

Junior Lara Newberry’s 35 digs were a match high as she led four other Lady Mocs in double digit digs. Freshman Aurore Kullak collected 19, Herndon had 18, Engel tallied 13 and Ball had 10.

Freshman Stacy Byrd finished with 12 kills and 46 total attacks, while junior Liz Sheets dished out 13 kills and 40 total attacks for Wofford. Sophomore Lindsey Richardson and freshman Catelyn Amende also collected 34 total attacks apiece.

Sophomore Joanna Suddath’s career best 52 assists led all players.

Sophomore Brittany Thompson paced the Terriers defense with 32 digs. Other double digit dig collectors were sophomore Sarah Palmer with 19, Suddath had 17 and sophomore Shanna Hughes finished with 16.

Wofford will head back on the road for a double-dose of SoCon competition in Charleston, S.C. The Terriers will take on The Citadel on Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup, and then follow it by a 2 p.m. Sunday contest against the College of Charleston.
