GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Two second half goals propelled No. 23 Furman to a 2-0 victory Saturday evening against Wofford in the Southern Conference men's soccer tournament quarterfinal round at the Paladins' Stone Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
The Terriers kept the nationally-ranked Paladins scoreless through the opening 45 minutes of play, including a missed Penalty Kick. Following a Wofford (7-12-1) foul inside the 18-yard box, Furman's Jordan Howard had his shot hit the crossbar keeping the game deadlocked at 0-0.
It took another shot by Howard to break the tie at the 52:55 mark. He received a pass from Patrick Murray after Murray was surrounded by three Terrier defenders. The Furman (16-3) sophomore then fired his attempt past Wofford goalkeeper Joey Taylor for the game's first score.
The score would not change and seemed to mirror the 1-0 regular-season victory by the Paladins until Shea Salinas added to the scoreboard in the final two minutes of regulation. The Terriers were mounting an offensive attack in an attempt at forcing extra time, but Murray again came up with a loose ball and dribbled nearly 60 yards before passing to a wide-open Salinas for a clinching score at 88:53.
Freshman Armin Kinigadner, who led tied Kentrel Owens for the team lead with four goals this season, finished with a team-high three shots. Chris Davis matched his effort to pace the Paladins.
