Waring named SoCon tourney MVP; four Terriers named to all-tournament team

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Brandon Waring was named most valuable player of the Southern Conference baseball tournament while second baseman Eric Sturkie, shortstop Michael Gilmartin and pitcher Ben Austin were named to the all-tournament team.

Waring batted .560 (14-for-25) with five home runs, a triple, 16 RBIs and nine runs scored for the tournament to lead Wofford to its first SoCon tournament championship in school history. The junior third baseman broke tournament records for home runs, hits, RBIs and total bases while also surpassing the Southern Conference single season home run record. Waring added multiple home runs in back-to-back games against No. 1 seed College of Charleston and No. 5 seed UNC Greensboro and capped the five-game spread with a go-ahead two-run bomb against No. 7 seed The Citadel in the championship.

Sturkie, a senior from Lexington, S.C., belted a pair of homers and drove in seven runs while compiling a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage at second base. Sturkie added a three-run shot in a 12-5 win over UNC Greensboro and added another solo shot in the semifinal game against The Citadel.

Gilmartin, a freshman from Moorpark, Cal., batted .417 (10-for-24) with seven runs and two RBIs from the leadoff spot. The closer also picked up a save in the championship game against The Citadel after holding the Bulldogs to one unearned run over the final 2 1/3 innings in a 4-2 win.

Austin, a junior right hander Chapel Hill, N.C., recorded a win in both of his starts while allowing only three runs over 12.2 innings of work. After holding No. 8 seed Furman to one run on five hits over seven innings in Wofford’s tournament opener, Austin came back on only two days rest to hurl 5 2/3 innings of two-run baseball in the semifinal game against The Citadel. The wins were his 10th and 11th of the season which ties Wofford’s single season wins record.
