Samford tops Wofford volleyball in three sets

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Samford kept its undefeated mark in the Southern Conference volleyball standings on Sunday as it defeated Wofford 3-0 in Birmingham, Ala. The Terriers were defeated 25-21, 25-14 and 25-18.
Wofford (11-10, 1-5 SoCon) fell behind early 3-0 and got within one on back-to-back kills by Lindsey Richardson and Shanna Hughes. However, the Terriers were unable to get any closer as Samford went on two extended runs to take the opening set.
Samford (18-2, 7-0 SoCon) kept the momentum going in the second set jumping out to a 7-1 advantage. Wofford would get within four at 9-5, but Samford responded with runs of consecutive points to take the second set.
The Terriers hung tough in the early stages of set three. Leading 10-9, Samford won six of the next eight points to take a 16-11 edge. Wofford would get within four at 18-14 but the Bulldogs went on take seven of the last 11 points to take the set and the match.
Stacy Byrd led the Wofford offense with 10 kills on 23 attacks committing just three errors resulting in a .304 hitting percentage. Hughes added nine kills while Joanna Suddath had 23 assists.
The Terrier defense was led by Brittany Thompson who had nine digs.
Ashley Adams and Rachel Gadberry led the Samford offense with ten kills apiece. Courtney Gay Led the Bulldog defense with eight digs.
The Terriers return to action on Saturday as they welcome the Catamounts from Western Carolina at 7 p.m.
