SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Wofford volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Furman on Wednesday night in Spartanburg. The Paladins took the match 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22.
Play early on went back and forth between both teams, with neither one able to grab a comfortable lead. Wofford (12-12, 2-7 SoCon) gained its first multi-point lead at 11-9 on a kill by
Shanna Hughes. The Paladins responded with an extended run taking nine of the next ten points to gain an 18-12 advantage. Furman (13-9, 6-3 SoCon) went on to hold off the Terriers to win the opening set.
The Paladins came out strong in set two and jumped out on the Terriers to gain a 5-2 lead, and eventually extended it to 12-7. Trailing 17-13, Wofford won five consecutive points to knot the score at 17 on solid serving by
Carolyn Rivers. Following a Furman timeout, the Paladins regained the lead and took the set.
Wofford would come out firing in set three to take an early edge. However, Furman responded with two extended runs to take the set and the match.
Joanna Suddath led the Terrier offense hitting .600 with six kills and zero errors on ten total attacks, to go along with 27 assists. Hughes and
Stacy Byrd tied for the team high in kills with nine apiece.
The Terrier defense was led by
Brittany Thompson who has 23 digs, while
Liz Sheets added four total blocks.
Katherine Hall and Alison West led the Paladin offense with nine kills each. Pamela Gehrke led the Furman defense with 15 digs, while Kelly Kirby added 14.
Wofford returns to action on Saturday against Georgia Southern at 2 p.m. The Terriers will also host Davidson on Sunday at 2 p.m.
