GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Wofford volleyball team dropped its first of two Southern Conference road matches falling to UNC Greensboro 3-0 on Saturday. The Spartans took the match 25-16, 25-17 and 25-22.
Wofford (11-7, 1-2 SoCon) fell behind early and never could recover in the opening set. UNC Greensboro jumped out to a 7-3 lead. The Terrier got within one at 7-6 on a service ace by J
oanna Suddath. However, the Spartans would push their lead to four at 11-7 and never look back.
Neither team could pull away from each other in the second set as the score was knotted at ten. The Spartans would win seven of the next eight points to take a 17-11 advantage. Trailing 20-12, the Terriers would cut the deficit to 20-16 after a four point run. UNC Greensboro (11-6, 3-1 SoCon) would close out the set taking five of the next six points.
Set three started off very similar to that of set two with neither team able to break away. Tied at 12, UNC Greensboro ran off three straight points to take a 15-12 advantage. Wofford would cut the lead to 16-15, but the Spartans would respond with a five point run to increase the lead to six. The Terriers would not lie down however and fault back to get within two at 22-20. The Spartans would then close out the match on a three point run.
Shanna Hughes led the Wofford offensive attack tallying six kills on 25 attacks committing two errors resulting in a hitting percentage of .154.
Stacy Byrd led all Wofford hitters with seven kills.
Branagan Fuller led the Spartan attack with 13 kills while Kayren Finney also reached double figures with 12. Clara Tse led the UNC Greensboro defensive efforts with 12 digs.
Wofford returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. against the Phoenix of Elon.
