ELON, N.C.- The Wofford Volleyball team was unable to come away with a victory on Sunday as it fell to the home standing Phoenix of Elon. Elon took the match 3-1 on scores of 22-25, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-20.
Wofford (11-8, 1-3 SoCon) was unable to pull away from the Phoenix in the early part of the opening set. Tied at 13, the Terriers scored three consecutive points to earn a lead of 16-13. Elon would fight back however and eventually knot the score at 20. Following consecutive Elon errors, Wofford scored three of the next five points capped off by a
Brittany Thompson kill to take the set.
Elon (12-8, 2-2 SoCon) would jump out to a commanding lead in set two winning 12 of the first 15 points to take a 12-3 advantage. The Terriers were unable to battle back as Elon tied the match at one set apiece.
The Terriers would fall behind early in the third set as the Phoenix opened up with a 5-0 run. Elon would extend the lead to 12-5 before the Terriers would take the next three points to cut the deficit to four. However, Elon would respond with a sustained run to take the set.
The fourth set started with both teams going back and forth. Leading 13-12, Elon Strung together four straight points to take a 17-12 advantage. Wofford didn’t back down and brought the score back to 20-18. However, the Phoenix would end the Terrier run and take the match.
Anna Gustafson led the Wofford offensive attack hitting .667 with 6 kills on 7 attacks committing just one error. Thompson reached double digits in kills with 11 while
Shanna Hughes had a match high 16 kills.
Sarah Palmer anchored the Terrier defense with 23 digs. Hughes capped off her double-double with 14 digs while
Joanna Suddath chipped in 13 along with 35 assists on offense.
Caroline Lemke and Traci Stewart led the Phoenix offense with 12 and ten kills, respectively. Kelly Blakewood had 23 digs on the backline while Elon as a team had 13 total blocks.
Wofford will take to the court on Saturday at 7 p.m. as they travel Chattanooga, TN to take on the Chattanooga Mocs.
