CHARLESTON, S.C.- The Wofford volleyball team fell on the road Saturday night to the conference leading Cougars of College of Charleston 3-0. The Cougars took the match on scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-19.
In set one, College of Charleston (18-6, 11-1 SoCon) showed their muscles from the start jumping out on the Terriers by an 11-0 margin. Wofford (14-13, 4-8 SoCon) would have a four point run of their own, but it was not enough to overtake the Cougars as they took the opening set.
The Terriers would battle through the middle of the second set, but a late push from the Cougars pushed the lead to one the Terriers could not overcome; giving the Cougars a two set lead.
Trailing by two sets, the Terriers were unable to recover as the Cougars once again jumped out to a quick 9-1 advantage in set three. College of Charleston was ahead 21-11 when the Terriers went on a six point run to pull within four. However, the Cougars would respond and take four of the next six points to take the match.
Stacy Byrd led the Terrier offense with eight kills while Shanna Hughes added 7. Defensively for the Terriers, Brittany Thompson led the way with 12 digs.
Whitney Russell had a match high ten kills to lead the Cougar offense while Emily Shelton tallied 15 digs to lead the defense.
Wofford returns to action on Sunday at the Citadel. Match time is slated for 3 p.m.
