Men’s Basketball Falls 82-49 To Davidson
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – The Wofford College men’s basketball team was defeated 82-49 by Davidson in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament at the North Charleston Coliseum. Drew Gibson led the Terriers with 24 points in his final game for Wofford.
Wofford ends the season 16-16 overall and 8-12 in SoCon play. Davidson is 24-6 overall and 20-0 in conference play. In addition to Gibson’s 24 points, the Terriers were led by Noah Dahlman with ten points. Tim Johnson pulled down 13 rebounds. Davidson was led by SoCon Player of the Year Stephen Curry with 19 points and Bryant Barr with 17 points. Andrew Lovedale had eleven rebounds.
“I wish we could have made a better showing today,” said head coach Mike Young. “We did not play well. I admire a lot about Davidson. They have a tremendous pressure to win and they came out today just like any other game and were exceptional. We were less than exceptional and I am glad we do not have to play them again this year.”
The Wildcats scored first, but Tim Johnson tied the game with a basket. At 14:35, Davidson was up 11-3 after a three-pointer by Jason Richards. Back-to-back lay-ups by Noah Dahlman cut the lead to 11-7 at 13:30, but Stephen Curry hit a three to go up 14-7. Shane Nichols responded with a three-pointer of his own and after a basket by Junior Salters the Terriers were down 15-12 at 11:36.
Davidson extended the lead to 22-13 before Drew Gibson hit two free throws with 8:17 left on the clock. Noah Dahlman hit two free throws and then a lay-up for a 27-19 Wildcat lead. The Terriers were outscored 16-4 over the final 6:41 of the second half, as Wofford’s only points came from four free throws by Drew Gibson. Davidson took a 43-23 lead into the break.
In the second half, Wofford opened with a three-pointer by Drew Gibson, but it was matched by Stephen Curry with a three. Drew Gibson added a jumper at 17:12 to cut the lead to 46-28. Stephen Curry answered with a three as the Wildcats as they began an 8-2 run to extend the lead to 54-30.
Davidson pushed the lead to 58-30 until Terry Martin had a dunk at 11:35 in the second half. Drew Gibson added a bucket to make it 58-34, but then the Wildcats went on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to extend the lead to 71-36 with 6:48 on the clock.
Tim Johnson scored a couple big baskets for the Terriers to get the lead back to 73-42, then Drew Gibson made two free throws at 3:52 to make it a 73-46 game. But the Wildcats continued to score in the final minutes, taking the 82-49 victory.
Wofford shot 28.1% from the floor and 13.3% from three. The Terriers were 57.7% from the line. The Wildcats were 46.2% from the floor and 44.8% from behind the arc and 69.2% from the free throw line. Davidson had a 50-36 lead on the boards.
Drew Gibson and Shane Nichols ended their careers at Wofford. Gibson leaves with 1,027 career points and Nichols has 1,176 career points at Wofford. Noah Dahlman ended the season with 10+ points in seven of the final eight games. The game was the third this season against a team ranked in the top #25. The Terriers’ 16 wins on the season were the most since the 1994-95 season and the most in Wofford’s Division I-era.
