Seth Goldwire Named SoCon Defensive Player of Week

Box Score SPARTANBURG, SC – The Southern Conference has named Wofford linebacker Seth Goldwire the Defensive Player of the Week. In the game against Georgia Southern, Goldwire had two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.

The weekly honor is the first of Goldwire’s career. In the 38-37 overtime victory in Statesboro, Goldwire tied for the team lead in tackles with eleven. He intercepted a pass in the first quarter and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. In addition, he intercepted a pass at the end of the second quarter with a 26-yard return. He added a fumble recovery in the third quarter, plus had 1.5 sacks for a loss of nine yards.

So far this season, the native of Guyton, Georgia, has 41 total tackles and has led the team in tackles in three of the four games. Goldwire also has 2.0 tackles for a loss of ten yards and six pass break-ups.

In addition to Goldwire, Appalachian State running back Devin Radford is the Offensive Player of the Week, Georgia Southern receiver Demarcus Watts is the Freshman of the Week and Elon kicker Andrew Wilcox is the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league’s sports information directors.

This is the third SoCon Player of the Week award this season for Wofford. Dane Romero was Offensive Player of the Week on September 1 and Mitch Allen was Freshman of the Week on September 8.

Goldwire was also one of five players nationally to be recognized by the College Sporting News as a National All-Star for the week. He was joined by Rhett Bomar (Sam Houston State), Jordan Scott (Colgate), Brandin Jordan (Southern Illinois) and Joe Marcoux (Villanova).

After a bye week, Wofford will return home on October 11 to host Chattanooga. The game will be a part of Homecoming festivities at Wofford and will also be broadcast on SportSouth at 3:00 pm.
