Wofford vs. Appalachian State Box Score

BOONE, N.C. – Despite winning the first set, the Terrier volleyball team fell to Appalachian State in four sets (25-23, 16-25, 21-25, 15-25) in Southern Conference action Saturday.

Appalachian State opened the match with a 10-1 run in the first set, and looked to have the first set under control with a 22-17 lead before the Terriers stormed back behind four straight kills from junior Stacy Byrd, tying the score at 23. A Mountaineer attack error and another kill from Byrd would give the Terriers the two points needed to take the first set with a come-from-behind score of 25-23.

In the second set, Appalachian State again jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, but this time managed to maintain their lead throughout the set, taking the second set by a score of 25-16.

The third set was a battle, with each team claiming points early in the set. After ties at 12 and 13, the Mountaineers went on a 6-0 run to take a 19-13 lead. Wofford was unable to overcome the deficit, and Appalachian State claimed the third set 25-21.

Wofford opened the fourth set with strong offensive play, claiming a 7-4 lead before the Mountaineers responded to tie the score at seven. This time it was the Mountaineers’ turn to capitalize on their offense. Four Appalachian State kills punctuated by a Wofford miscue spurred a 7-2 run for the Mountaineers, allowing them to take a 14-9 lead. The Terriers were not able to overcome the deficit, falling 25-15 in the fourth and final set.

Appalachian State was led by 13 kills apiece from Caroline Sedon and Kelsey Kuehner. Cassie Engelgau led the defense with 20 digs, and Maja Jechorek recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs.

Stacy Byrd recorded a career high 26 kills to lead the Terriers while also nabbing 14 digs for a double-double performance. Junior Catelyn Amende added 10 kills while libero Sarah Palmer led the defense with 15 digs. Setter Joanna Suddath also notched a double-double with 11 digs and 38 assists.

With the win, Appalachian State improves to 9-13 overall and 5-3 in Southern Conference play while Wofford falls to 15-8 on the season and 2-5 in league play. The Terriers will travel to Western Carolina Sunday for a 4:00 p.m. match.
