Wofford vs. Campbell Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Wofford women’s basketball team opened the 2009-10 season against Campbell, falling 78-80 in a hard-fought battle against the Lady Camels.

Geami Britt led four players in double-digit scoring with 15 points, including a jumper with 48 seconds remaining to give the Lady Camels a one-point lead. Although Wofford outscored Campbell in the second half, 42-40, the Lady Camels’ .569 field goal percentage proved too much to overcome.

The game opened with misses on both sides of the court, with the first points being scored at the 17:54 mark on a layup from Campbell’s Ashley Williamson. A jumper from Mahagony Williams evened the score at two, and the Terriers were able to gain momentum to build a 13-10 lead. The teams traded three-pointers, leaving Wofford up by three at 16-13 before two straight three-pointers from Rachel Brittenham gave the Terriers a nine-point advantage, their largest of the half.

Wofford maintained the lead until the 6:30 mark, when a three-pointer from Britt tied the score at 26, the fourth tie of the game. The Lady Camels took their first lead since the opening shot off another trey by Britt but the Terriers quickly tied the score at 29 and reclaimed the lead. The Wofford advantage wouldn’t last for long, however, and the final minutes of the first half saw the Lady Camels capitalize on two free throws and a two-point shot to take the 40-36 lead at halftime.

Freshman Rachel Brittenham led Wofford in the first half with nine points, going 2-3 from beyond the arc and shooting 3-3 from the free throw line.

Campbell carried the momentum into the opening minutes of the second half, widening its lead to eight points at the 19 minute mark and maintaining at least a three-point lead over the next 11 minutes. A three-pointer from Ashley Kroker with 7:40 remaining tied the score for the first time in the second half at 62 and a made jumper from Maddie Helms gave the Terriers their first advantage of the half.

Neither team led by more than three points in the final seven minutes of the game, with the advantage changing four times before a made jumper from Britt put the Lady Camels up by one with 48 seconds remaining. A Terrier turnover gave the ball back to Campbell, who took advantage of the miscue by pushing its lead to three. A layup from Gramblin with six seconds remaining put the Terriers within one, but a Campbell free throw allowed the Lady Camels to hang on, despite a last-second shot from Gramblin that fell short.

Geami Britt led Campell with 15 points on 6-10 shooting from the field. Tonisha Baker and Ashley Williamson each added 13 points, while Amanda O’Neill contributed 10 in the win. Baker recorded a perfect 4-4 night from the field and added five defensive rebounds. Williamson led the team with seven total rebounds.

Three players recorded double-digit points for the Terriers, with freshman Mariah Masalin, senior Kathlyn Varno and junior Maddie Helms contributing 11 points apiece. Masalin earned her first collegiate start and added three assists, three rebounds and a steal for the Terriers. Senior Kelly Dwyer led Wofford with six rebounds and two blocks while also adding three assists and six points to the effort. Junior Mahagony Williams opened the season with nine points and five boards, while freshman Rachel Brittenham also added nine points.

With the win, Campell opens the season 1-0 while Wofford falls to 0-1. The Terriers will continue their road trip Sunday as they travel to UNC Wilmington. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
