Wofford vs. USC Upstate Box Score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team fell to cross-town rival USC Upstate in four sets (14-25, 25-14, 17-25, 28-30) on Tuesday.
In the first set, USC Upstate jumped out to an early 6-1 lead before a service error stopped the run. The Spartans continued to build their lead, however, and Wofford was unable to overcome a deficit as large as 11 points as USC Upstate took the first set by a score of 25-15.
Wofford recovered in the second set, taking an early 12-5 lead en route to a 25-14 lead. The Terriers faltered again in the third set, allowing USC Upstate to take a 25-17 victory. The third set saw 13 ties and seven lead changes before the Spartans managed a 30-28 win.
Morgan Thomas led the Spartans with 16 kills and only three errors for a .433 attack percentage. Setter Emily Sanders recorded a double-double with 20 assists and a team-high 13 digs.
Wofford was led by junior Stacy Byrd’s 14 kills. Byrd also notched a double-double with 10 digs, while senior Shanna Hughes led the team with 14 defensive saves.
With the loss, Wofford falls to 14-4 on the season while USC Upstate falls to 4-12 overall. The Terriers will travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on The Citadel on Friday and College of Charleston on Saturday in their first conference road trip of the season.
