SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior Mahagony Williams recorded her third straight double-double to lead the Terriers to their first Southern Conference win of the season, outlasting UNC Greensboro 61-60.
Wofford opened the contest with a 6-0 run and led by as many as eight points before the Spartans rallied to tie the score at 12 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.
After a second tie at 15, a three-pointer from senior Kristin Bradley followed by a layup from sophomore April Moorhouse gave the Terriers a five-point lead, but the Spartans answered with a 6-0 run to take a 23-22 lead with 4:27 remaining in the half.
The last four minutes of the half saw the Terrier defense hold the Spartans scoreless while a combined offensive effort from Williams, Kathlyn Varno, and Kelly Dwyer helped Wofford to a 31-23 lead heading into the break. The eight-point advantage marks the largest lead this season that the Terriers have held at the half.
The Terriers struggled at the opening of the second half, allowing the Spartans an 11-3 scoring run which ended in the third tie of the game at 34. A three-pointer from freshman Mariah Masalin gave the Terriers the advantage, but a layup and free throw from UNCG evened the score again at 37 with 12:20 remaining in the game.
A layup from Kelly Dwyer gave Wofford a small advantage, which the Terriers were able to hold on to for almost three minutes before the Spartans scored to even the game at 43. A 9-4 run for UNC Greensboro earned the Spartans their largest lead of the game at 52-47 with six minutes remaining, but a good layup from Williams surrounded by four made free throws from the junior tied the score at 53 with just under five minutes remaining.
UNC Greensboro missed its next shot, giving the Terriers a chance at the lead, and a fadeaway jumper from freshman Domi Gergely followed by a free throw put Wofford up by three points. UNC Greensboro’s Monique Floyd responded with a layup and free throw of her own to tie the score at 56, and the teams exchanged jumpers leaving the score tied at 58 with one minute remaining.
In the last minute of play, the Spartans’ Amanda Leigh connected on a two-point shot to give UNC Greensboro the 60-58 advantage with only thirty seconds remaining. After a Terrier timeout, senior Kelly Dwyer scored what would be the game-winning three-pointer, as the Spartans’ final attempt fell short, giving the Terriers the 61-60 victory.
Junior Mahagony Williams led the Terriers with 14 points and 12 rebounds, her third straight double-double. Sophomore April Moorhouse added 11 points while senior Kelly Dwyer contributed 10. Freshman Rachel Brittenham paced the team with 5 assists while adding two steals. Senior Kathlyn Varno added six points and six rebounds in the win.
The Spartans were led by junior Amanda Leigh’s 21 points, while junior Monique Floyd added 13 points off the bench. Senior Lakiah Hyson grabbed seven boards and three steals for the Spartans.
With the win, Wofford improves to 2-11 on the season and captures its first league win for a 1-5 Southern Conference record. UNC Greensboro falls to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Terriers will head to Charleston on Monday, January 11 to take on the College of Charleston in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
