Volleyball: Cougars Top Terriers, 3-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford College Terriers women’s volleyball team slipped to 10-10 overall and 0-3 in the Southern Conference as they fell 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 26-28, 25-18) to the College of Charleston Cougars, who improved to 14-4 overall and 3-0 in the SoCon.  

With the score tied at six in the opening set, the Cougars mounted a 14-3 run to take a 20-9 lead.  College of Charleston scored seven consecutive points during the run, as they went on to take the set 25-14.  C of C had 15 kills and a .542 hitting percentage compared to Wofford’s nine kills and .261 hitting percentage. Amanda Liguori had three kills for the Terriers.

In set two, Wofford broke a 6-6 tie with a 6-2 run highlighted by kills from Liguori and Wendy Burnett.  The Cougars would cut the lead to 12-11, but Wofford used kills by Catelyn Amende and Rachel Woodlee to push the lead back to three, 14-11.  However, C of C went on a 7-0 run that ended with the Cougars up 18-14, as they eventually won the second set 25-22.  Amende sparked the Terrier offense with four kills.

Wofford jumped out to a 7-1 lead as Reagan Styles’ aggressive serving highlighted run for the Terriers in the third set.  Styles served five times and had one ace during the stretch.  Wofford maintained a narrow lead, as the College of Charleston cut the lead four times to one, before the Cougars tied the match at 15.  The two teams had four ties before Wofford held a 24-22 lead, but couldn’t take the set as C of C fought off two set points to tie the match at 24.  With the score tied at 26, the Terriers took advantage of a Cougar attack error and a Amende kill ended the match, 28-26 Wofford.  Stacy Byrd had five kills in the third frame.

Set four started out as another back-and-forth contest as the two teams had eight ties over the first 22 points.  With the score tied at 11 the Cougars went on a 3-0 run and never looked back as they clinched the match with a 25-18 win.  Byrd added another five kills in the final set.

College of Charleston won the battle at the net as they had 12 total team blocks compared to Wofford’s six total team blocks.  They also held a slight attack advantage as they outhit the Terriers .233 to .203.

Byrd led the Terriers with 12 kills, ten of which came in the final two sets.  She also had a team high 14 points.  Amende followed with 11 ills and .320 hitting percentage.   The senior duo were the only Terriers with double digit kills.  Bekah Dorsey had 26 assists and 12 digs as she reeled off her third double-double in as many matches.  It was eighth double-double of the season.  Tara Gough also passed out 18 assists, and Styles led Wofford with 19 digs.  Arden Anderson had a team-high four block assists in the match.

Wofford will return to action Saturday in Ben Johnson Arena against The Citadel at 6 p.m. as they reach the halfway mark of their eight-match homestand.
