ETSU Sweeps Wofford, 3-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford College women’s volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-17) to East Tennessee State University Wednesday night in a nonconference match in Ben Johnson Arena.

With the loss the Terries slip to 12-14 overall, while the Bucs improve to 19-6.

In the opening set, the two teams traded points throughout the opening of the match.  Wofford broke an 8-8 tie with back-to-back kills from Rachel Woodlee and a kill by Stacy Byrd gave the Terriers a 12-8 lead.  Wofford held the lead until the Bucs rallied from down 14-11 to tie the set at 14 on an Alysa Long kill and two errors by the Terriers.  With the set tied at 15, ETSU broke out with on a 4-0 run to take a 19-15 lead.  Wofford was never able to get back in the match as they fell 25-20.  ETSU had 18 points, 16 kills, an ace and a team block, compared to Wofford’s 11 points, eight kills, two aces and a team block.
 
Set two was the closest set of the match as the Bucs pulled out a 27-25 win.  The set saw 11 ties and three lead changes.  Wofford again took an 8-8 tie and turned it into  a 14-10 lead.  This time it was back-to-back kills from Catelyn Amende that sparked the run.  However, again the Bucs would rally to tie this set.  This time they battled back from down 18-15 to tie the match at 20.  Long had two critical kills in the comeback for ETSU.  After the tie, Wofford never regained the lead as the battled to tie the set at 23, 24 and 25.  With the set tied at 25, two Terrier errors gave the Bucs the win.

Wofford took an early 7-3 set three lead, but saw it vanish as ETSU went on a 7-0 run to take a 10-7 lead.  Wofford never got back in the match as they fell 25-17 in the final set.   The Bucs outhit the Terriers .345 to .107 in the set.

Wofford was led by Wendy Burnett with nine kills a .571 hitting percentage.  Her nine kills came on 14 swings with only one error.  She also added three block assists and had 10.5 total points to lead the team.  Amende added seven kills and four block assists.  Bekah Dorsey handed out 14 assists, and Tara Gough had 11 assists.  Reagan Styles collected 15 digs, and made several hustle plays early in the match.  She left her feet twice in the opening set to keep a play alive and get a free ball over the net. 

ETSU was led by Megan Devine, who had 15 kills and a .256 hitting percentage.  Long added 11 kills, .381 hitting percentage and four block assists.  Whitney Cogburn had 37 assists, while Kiley Tamblyn picked up 22 digs.

Wofford will return to SoCon action Saturday at UT-Chattanooga and Sunday at Samford.
