BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- The Wofford College volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (29-27, 25-8, 25-22) setback at the hands of Samford University Sunday afternoon in a Southern Conference match.
Samford (11-13, 5-5) took an early 10-4 lead over Wofford (12-16, 2-8) early in the first set and pushed the lead to as many as eight points, 17-9, before the Terriers sparked a comeback. Wofford went on an 11-3 run to tie the set at 20. Wofford’s run was aided by seven Bulldog errors. The two teams traded points until Samford took a 28-27 lead on a Wofford service error and won the set 29-27 on a terrier attack error.
In the second set, Wofford never got into the match as Terriers only managed to put eight points on the scoreboard in a 25-8 loss. Wofford only had three kills in the set and managed only five total points as they added a block and a service ace. Samford had 16 kills on 24 team swings with only two errors for a .583.
In the final set, the two teams stayed close as there were ten ties and four lead changes before Samford broke a 21-21 tie with four of the final five points to clinch the match with a 25-22 win.
Byrd led the Terriers with 13 kills, while Bekah Dorsey handed out 15 assists.
Samford had two Bulldogs in double-digit kilss as Allie Bettinger recorded 14 kills and Lauren Hutchinson notched 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Casey Garvey had 39 assists running the Samford attack.
Wofford will travel to Statesboro, Ga. for their next SoCon match Saturday against Georgia Southern.
