SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Arden Anderson set a new career-high for kills with 13 and points with 16, but the Wofford College Terriers fell 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-19, 29-27) to rival Furman in a Southern Conference showdown in Ben Johnson Arena.
Anderson paced the Terriers with her 13 kills on 23 attempts with only three errors for a .435 hitting percentage. She add four total blocks (one solo block and four block assists) to reach her 16 point total.
In the opening set, Furman broke a 4-4 tie with an 8-2 run to take a 12-6 lead. The Terriers rallied with aggressive serving from Reagan Styles and unforced errors by the Paladins to tie the set a 15. The teams stayed close over the next fourteen points until Furman broke a tie at 22 with consecutive points to take a 24-22 lead. Wofford fought double set points on a Furman attack error and an Anderson kill to tie the set at 24. A ball handling error and an attack error by the Paladins gave the Terriers the 26-24 win. Catelyn Amende and Amanda Liguori had three kills for Wofford in the set.
Furman only relinquished the lead the as they took the second set 25-16. Wofford only managed to tie the match three times at one, two and three during the set. The Paladins outhit the Terriers .235 to .000 in the set. They also won the battle at the net with four team blocks compared to Wofford’s two. Amende did lead all hitters with four kills in the set. Reagan Styles had nine digs in the stanza.
Set three was much as the same story as Wofford trailed from the opening point as the Paladins took the set 25-19. After the opening point, Wofford never cut the lead to two points three times and trailed by as many as seven points during the set. Anderson accounted for 46 percent of the Terrier points in the set as she had six kills and a solo block for seven points. As a team, the Terriers had 15 points.
Facing the end of the match, Wofford took an early, 7-3, lead in set four. However Furman rallied to tie the set at eight. Wofford broke a 10-10 tie with a 4-1 run to take a 14-11 lead. Stacy Byrd had two kills during the stretch. Furman, again, would regroup and tie the set at 14. After three ties, Wofford took the largest lead of the set 22-18, highlighted by two Anderson kills. But Furman went on a 4-0 run to tie the set a 22. Wofford survived four set points, but could survive the fifth. A Terrier service error and a Paladin block gave Furman the 29-27 set four win to clinch the match.
Behind Anderson, Amende had ten kills and four total blocks (one solo block and three block assists). Bekah Dorsey passed out 21 assists, and Tara Gough handed out 16 assists. Reagan Styles picked up 21 digs in the four-set match for the Terriers.
Wofford will travel to UNC Greensboro for their next match on Saturday, October 9th.
