Paladins Push Past Terriers, 3-1

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Despite taking an early lead, the Wofford College women’s volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-21, 25-14) loss to in-state rival Furman Wednesday night in Alley Gymnasium in Southern Conference south division match.

The Terriers took the opening set 26-24 as they hit .316 in the match compared to Furman’s .214.  The Terriers jumped out to a 3-1 lead, only to see the Paladins rally to tie the match at three and take a 6-3 lead.  Wofford would battle to the tie the match at 11, before Furman regained the lead, 15-13.  The Paladins would push the lead to 20-15 before Wofford made a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 21-20.  The Terriers used strong defense and aggressive serving from Tara Gough to climb back into the set.  Wofford tied the match at 22 on a Furman service error and attack error.  With the set tied at 23, Furman’s Carolina Adams gave the Paladins set point,  but Stacy Byrd tied the match at 24 with a kill.  The Terriers took the set on two attack errors by Furman to when the opening stanza 26-24.  Wofford’s Catelyn Amende had four kills on six attempts, and Bekah Dorsey had ten assists in the frame.

In the second set, The two teams traded points until Furman broke a 6-6 with and 9-0 run to take a 15-6 lead. The Paladins went on to take the second set, 25-17, and evened the match at one set apiece.  Furman outhit Wofford .323 to .148 in the set.  Wofford’s Rachel Woodlee had four kills.

The third set saw Wofford jump out to a 7-3 lead.  The Terriers held the lead until knotted the match at 13.  After trading points, Furman pushed a lead to 20-17, but the Terriers didn’t quit as they gave the set its seventh tie at 21.  Furman would go on to the next four points to seal the set, 25-21.

Set four started with eight ties, before the Paladins pushed a 12-9 lead to 16-10.  Furman only allowed the Terriers four more points as they took the set 25-14 to end the match.  The Paladins hit .294 compared to the Terriers’ -.098.

Wofford was led by Woodlee, who had 12 kills and ten digs for a double-double.  Bekah Dorsey handed out 24 assists, while Reagan Styles picked up 13 digs.  

For the Paladins, Adams had a match-high 17 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.  Chandler Ambrester added 15 kills, while Kelly Kirby passed out 28 assists.  Natalie Braun scooped up a match-high 15 digs, while Adams had ten digs to complete her double-double.  

Wofford will play their final home match Saturday at 7 p.m. against Elon in Ben Johnson Arena for Senior Day.
