SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The visiting Elon Phoenix spoiled the Wofford Terriers’ senior day with 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-16) win Saturday night in a Southern Conference match in Ben Johnson Arena.
Prior to the match, the Terriers honor their three seniors: Catelyn Amende, Stacy Byrd and Courtney Shippy.
The match opened with having six points over the opening 20 points. With the score knotted at ten, the Terriers went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-10 lead. Wofford road Tara Gough’s serve for four points, as she had three aces during the run. The Terriers never allowed the Phoenix back into the set as they won the set by seven points, 25-18. Wofford’s Rachel Woodlee had four kills in the set, as the Terriers hit .538 compared to Elon’s .294.
In the second set, Elon exploded out of the gate to a 10-4 lead and never looked back. The Phoenix hit .406 and held Wofford to a .056 hitting percentage as they took the set 25-15. The Phoenix had 20 points to the Terrier’s 11 points. Elon’s Sarah Schermerhorn had five kills in the set on seven swings.
Elon started where they left in the third set as they took a 10-5 lead. Elon held an 18-12 lead, before Wofford went on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 20. Wofford used kills from Amende, Woodlee, Amanda Liguori and a double-block from Arden Anderson and Byrd to tie the set. After tying the match, Wofford didn’t score another point as Elon won the final five points to take the third set 25-20.
In the fourth and final set, Wofford took an early lead, 7-4, but Elon rallied to tie the set at eight. With the match tied at ten, the Phoenix went on a 7-2 lead to take control of the set, 17-12. Elon clinched the match with a 25-16 set four win, as they hit .560 compared the Wofford’s .212 hitting percentage.
Wofford was led by Woodlee, who had 14 kills and .333 hitting percentage. Byrd had 12 kills and a .429 hitting percentage for the Terriers. Amende had three total blocks with a block solo and two block assists, and fellow senior, Shippy collected a career-high nine digs, one of three Terriers to pick up nine digs. Reagan Styles and Byrd also had nine digs. Bekah Dorsey passed out 29 assists, and Gough followed with 10 assists to go along with four service aces.
Schermerhorn paced Elon with 16 kills and .591 hitting percentage. Traci Stewart followed with 13 kills, and Caroline Lemke added 12 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Allison Johnson was the final player with double-digit kills for Elon as she had 11 kills. Megan McMahon had a match-high 14 digs, while Stewart completed the double-double with 11 digs. Ali Deatsch had ten digs, and McMahon earned her own double-double with 49 assists.
Wofford will wrap their season up with road matches against the College of Charleston and The Citadel on November 13 and 14th.
