Men’s Soccer Plays Furman in the First Round of SoCon Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Terriers ended their regular season this past Tuesday, facing Furman in the final home match of the year. With a 3-10-3 regular season record and a 1-6 conference standing, Wofford will enter the tournament at the No. 7 seed, allowing them to redeem themselves once again against Furman, who enters the tournament at the No. 2 seed. The first-round match is set to start at 7:00 p.m., tonight, November 7th, at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins were able to score two goals in the second half this past Tuesday, to overcome the one goal advantage Wofford had in the most recent meeting between the two programs. Alex Hutchins scored the first goal of the match, giving Wofford a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but Furman’s Caleb Suri was able to answer with a goal off a penalty kick in the second half to tie the game. Furman’s Josh Fusan scored the winning goal to push the Paladins past the Terriers, giving the Paladins a 2-1 win.

The 2010 Wofford men’s soccer teams returns to the tournament looking to defend their 2009 Southern Conference title. Last year’s crown gave the Terriers their first conference championship in men’s soccer history. This year marks the 12th appearance in the SoCon tournament for the Terriers, while Furman has gone to the tournament 21 times.

Furman has won the conference championship 13 times in their history, with their most recent title being won in 2007. They ended their 2010 season at an 8-6-4 regular season record and a 4-1-2 Southern Conference record. The Paladins are led in goals scored and total points by Fabien Vorbe. Vorbe has four goals on the year and tallies eight points.

Wofford is led by senior forward Wilson Hood, who leads the team in goals scored and total points. Hood has six goals scored on the season, along with one assists, giving him 13 total points on the year. Armin Kinigander follows close behind in the statistical categories. The senior midfielder has two goals on the year, along with six assists, giving him ten points for the season.
