Wofford vs. College of Charleston Box Score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Tonia Gerty led two players in double-digit scoring with 16 points as College of Charleston recorded a 65-51 win over Wofford in women’s basketball action Monday.
Both teams opened the game scoreless for more than three minutes before Wofford’s Mahagony Williams scored the first bucket at the 16:39 mark. A three-pointer from College of Charleston’s Ericka Williams 17 seconds later would give the Cougars the lead. The Terriers were able to tie the score at nine off a three-pointer from Natalie Gramblin, but could not regain the lead, allowing College of Charleston to build a double-digit advantage with five minutes remaining in the half.
The Terriers cut the lead into the single digits off a good free throw from Kathlyn Varno, but a team total of eight field goals in the first half was not enough to match the Cougar offense, and College of Charleston headed into halftime with a 33-20 lead.
The second half saw Wofford nearly match College of Charleston in scoring, with 31 points to the Cougars’ 32, but the Terriers were unable to overcome the double-digit deficit that the Cougars amassed in the first period.
College of Charleston built its lead to 21 points in the first three minutes of the second half, and led by as many as 25 points before the Terriers answered with a run of their own. A three-pointer from Natalie Gramblin at the 5:06 mark spurred a 13-3 run for Wofford, but it was not enough as the Cougars’ Tonia Gerty connected on a layup with 30 seconds remaining to seal the 65-51 win for College of Charleston.
Gerty recorded 16 points, five rebounds and six assists in the contest while Ericka Williams added 15 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. Deidra Jones added eight points.
The Terriers were led by Mahagony Williams’ 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior Natalie Gramblin contributed 10 points and senior Kelly Dwyer added seven points, three assists and three blocks.
Wofford returns to action Saturday, February 20 as the Terriers travel to Statesboro, Ga. to face Georgia Southern. Tip off is set for 12:00 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse.
