GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 23 Furman Friday night in the final Southern Conference regular season match of the 2011 season. With the loss, the Terriers drop to 5-11-1 overall, and finish with a 1-6 record in SoCon play. Furman improves to 13-2-4 overall and 4-1-2 in league action.
The Paladins took a 1-0 lead in the 44
th minute when Martin Ontiveros headed the ball past Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan from five yards out. Daniel Hojaij and Coleton Henning were credited with assists.
The Terriers struggled offensively throughout the first 45 minutes, as the squad was unable to attempt a single shot in the half.
Shortly after the start of the second half, Furman went up by a 2-0 score when Walker Zimmerman headed the ball into the center of the net following a corner kick by Ontiveros in the 46
th minute.
Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez took the first shot of the night for the Terriers in the 47
th minute, yet it was blocked by a Paladin defender. Chase West sent a shot toward the goal a few minutes later in the 50
th minute, but it sailed wide right.
The two shots in the early minutes of the second half by Wofford were the only shots that the Terriers were able to attempt throughout the entire match, as the team was outshot by Furman by a 16-2 margin.
Drennan took the loss in goal for the Terriers, allowing two goals with four saves while facing a total of 16 shots. Alec Kann gets the shutout win for the Paladins, facing 2 shots on the evening.
Wofford will return to action Monday night in its regular season finale, hosting Clemson in what will be Senior Night at Snyder Field. Seniors Andrew Drennan, Bryan Eddy, Quinn Hunt, and Wiley Sinkus will be honored in a pre-match ceremony, with the match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
