MADISON, Wisconsin – On Saturday night, the Wofford men’s basketball team was defeated 69-33 by Wisconsin at the Kohl Center. The Badgers are ranked #13 in the nation and used a 19-0 run in the first half to take the lead in front of a crowd of 17,230 fans.
Wofford is 1-2 on the season and Wisconsin is 3-0. Kevin Giltner and Karl Cochran led the Terriers with ten points each. Cochran also had five rebounds to tie for the team high with Lee Skinner. The Badgers were led by Josh Gasser with 16 points and Jared Berggren and Ryan Evans with 13 points each. Mike Bruesewitz led both teams with eight rebounds.
Both teams opened the game with three pointers, but the Badgers were up 11-5 at the 13:10 mark. Wofford cut the lead to 13-10 after a three by Karl Cochran at 9:51, but the Badgers would then score the next 19 points. Drew Crowell ended the run with a lay-up at the buzzer for a 32-12 score at the half. Wofford was 5-of-25 from the floor in the first half.
Early in the second half, Kevin Giltner hit two three-pointers for the Terriers and the advantage was cut to 42-20 after a bucket by Brad Loesing with 14:31 on the clock. However the Badgers would slowly extend the lead and the score was 58-27 after a three by Josh Gasser. With three minutes left in the game the score was 62-33 after a lay-up by Kevin Giltner, but the Badgers scored the final seven points of the game for the 69-33 margin.
Wofford shot 26.5% from the floor while Wisconsin shot 50.0% overall. The Terriers were 4-of-19 from three, while the Badgers were 9-of-23 from behind the arc. Wofford was 3-of-9 from the line and Wisconsin was 4-of-4 from the line. The Badgers had a 43 to 22 lead on the glass.
The Terriers will continue play in the Chicago Invitational Classic on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. at Bradley.
