SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the Southern Conference opener, the Wofford men’s basketball team was defeated 72-69 by Davidson. The Terriers cut the lead to one point in the final minute of play, however a last second three attempt to tie the game at the buzzer was missed.
Wofford is 3-4 on the season and Davidson is 5-1 overall. The Terriers were led by Drew Crowell with a career-high 17 points, while Karl Cochran and Kevin Giltner added 15 points each. Cochran was the leading rebounder with eight. The Wildcats were led by Jake Cohen with 26 points and De’Mon Brooks with 23 points.
The Wildcats scored the first five points of the game and had an 8-2 lead at the 16:27 mark of the first half. The Terriers then scored the next six points and tied the score at eight with a bucket by Brad Loesing six minutes into play. Davidson would then go on a 10-3 run and had an 18-11 advantage with 9:52 on the clock.
Wofford was able to pull within four points at 20-16 after a shot by Drew Crowell with eight minutes remaining in the first half. A three by Karl Cochran cut the Davidson lead to 20-19 with 7:20 on the clock. The Terriers took the lead for the first time in the game at the five minute mark after a jumper by Karl Cochran for a 25-24 score. Kevin Giltner hit two jumpers and Karl Cochran added a three for a 32-28 lead with 3:35 left in the half. At the break, the Wildcats had a 34-33 lead.
Drew Crowell scored the first four points of the second half to give the Terriers a 37-34 lead and Brad Loesing added a bucket for a 39-34 advantage with 18:25 on the clock and Davidson called a timeout. Wofford pushed the lead to 44-38 after a three pointer by Kevin Giltner five minutes into the second half. The Wildcats tied the game at 48 with 11:40 on the clock.
Davidson took a 51-50 lead after a three by Jake Cohen at the ten minute mark. The Wildcats retained a one point advantage at 58-57 with 6:36 left in the second half. Davidson was able to push the lead to 67-61 after a three pointer by J.P. Kuhlman with four minutes on the clock. A jumper by Kevin Giltner cut the score to 68-65 with 2:19 remaining. Brad Loesing made it a one-point game at 68-67. Davidson’s De’Mon Brooks hit a shot with 15 seconds left that gave the Wildcats a 72-69 lead. A last second three point attempt by Drew Crowell was missed, giving Davidson the win.
Wofford shot 52.7% from the floor while Davidson shot 47.1% overall. The Terriers were 4-of-12 from three, while the Wildcats were 5-of-18 from behind the arc. Wofford was 7-of-12 from the line and Davidson was 19-of-24 from the line. The Wildcats had a 30-26 lead in rebounds. Domas Rinksalis fouled out for Wofford.
Wofford remains at home on Saturday night as they host The Citadel at 7:00 p.m. The game will be available as a free video stream on TerrierVision.
