Terrier Turnovers Hand Phoenix 73-60 Win

ELON, N.C. -- The Wofford College women’s basketball team fell to Elon as the Phoenix took advantage of 25 Terrier turnovers to earn the 73-60 win in a Southern Conference game in Alumni Gym.

Wofford’s 25 turnovers lead to 19 points for Elon, while the Phoenix committed only 13 turnovers to lead to eight points for the Terriers.

Wofford opened the scoring first with a Mahagony Williams bucket in the paint.  The two teams battle for the lead until a Logan Morris layup gave Wofford an 8-6 lead with 14:40 to play.  Julie Taylor knocked down a three a minute later give Elon a 9-8 lead as they pulled out to a 15-10 lead with 10:31 remaining in the half.

The Terriers rallied to tie the game at 17 on a Morris layup that capped off a 7-2 run with eight and half minutes to play.   Two minutes later, Wofford turned a 21-19 deficit into a 25-21 lead with a 6-0 run with threes from Morris and Maddie Helms.  

Elon would rally back and give the game its fifth tie at 27 at the 1:25 mark on a layup by Ali Ford.  On Wofford’s next possession Ashley Kroker canned a three, but the Phoenix closed the half with the final four points to a take 31-30 lead into the break.  

Wofford overcame 15 turnovers in the half by going 12-of-24 from the floor, 50 percent.  They were also 4-of-7 from three for 57 percent and made both of their free throws in the half.  Elon shot 41 percent overall, 33 percent from three and 83 percent from the free throw line.  

Coming out of the break, Wofford took a 34-33 lead on a minute into play, but Elon would regain the lead with two free throws from Kelsey Harris.  It would be the last time Wofford would tie the game or have the lead.

The Phoenix went on a 4-0 to push the lead to 39-34 just under 18 minutes to play, and took the lead to 45-38 with 14:22 remaining.  

Wofford would close the gap to three on two Daniella Motley free throws with just under ten minutes to play, but Elon mounted an 11-3 run over the next four minutes to take to an 11 point lead, 65-54, with 5:47 to play.

The Phoenix never let Wofford back in the game as they improve their season record 10 16-9 overall and 10-6 in the SoCon with the 73-60 win.  Wofford falls to 7-16 overall and 3-12 in conference play.

Wofford finished the game 45 percent from the floor and 36 percent from three.  The Terriers went 0-for-6 in the second half from beyond the arc. Elon finished the afternoon 41 percent overall and 36 percent from three.  The Phoenix went 21-of-28 from the charity stripe while, the Terriers were 12-of-15 from the line.

Elon held a plus six rebounding margin, 36-30, but held a 15-7 advantage on the offensive boards that lead to 22 second chance points.

Mahagony Williams paced the Terriers in scoring for the third consecutive game with 13 points.  She also lead all rebounders in the game with eight boards. Morris and April Moorhouse had nine points apiece, while Rachel Brittenham had eight points and six of the Terriers nine assists.

Ford paced the Phoenix with 20 points, and Kelsey Harris added 12 points and a team high five assists.  Kelsey Evans, Lei Lei Hairston and Tiara Gause all had six rebounds for Elon.

Wofford will return to action on Valentine’s Day, February 14 at the College of Charleston with tip off schedule for 7 p.m.  Wofford won the first meeting between the two teams 76-67 on January 13.
