ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team scored once again in the opening minutes of play as the Terriers defeated Gardner-Webb by a 2-1 score Thursday afternoon in the Big South/SoCon Challenge at Winthrop University.
The Terriers (2-0) jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play when Ethan Miller sent a shot from the outside left corner of the 18-yard box into the top right corner of the goal, just over the reach of Gardner-Webb (1-1) keeper Andrew Robinson.
Play between the two squads was physical throughout the first half, as 17 fouls and two cards issued, including a red card to the Runnin’ Bulldogs in the 32nd minute of play, which gave Wofford a man advantage throughout the remainder of the match.
Blair Gaines raised the score to 2-0 in the 77th minute, finding the back of the net from eight yards out following a drop pass from Turner Almond to score the game-winner.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs were able to get on the scoreboard in the 85th minute of play as Chris Davis was able to put the ball past Terrier keeper Zach Woolever.
Woolever was credited with the win for Wofford, earning one save while facing 10 shots. Robinson was awarded the loss for Gardner-Webb, having two saves while facing a total of 12 shots.
The win over the Runnin’ Bulldogs was the fourth consecutive victory in the series for the Terriers, as Wofford has taken 11 of the 15 matches. It is also the first time that Wofford has started the season with a 2-0 record since the 1994 season.
Wofford will return to action Saturday evening as they take on Winthrop in the finale of the Big South/SoCon Challenge. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Eagle Field in Rock Hill, S.C.
