Men’s Soccer Falls To Winthrop, 3-2, In Double Overtime

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team battled the Winthrop Eagles to a double overtime match, but fell by a 3-2 score in the 108th minute Saturday night in the finale of the Big South/SoCon Challenge.

Winthrop (3-0) scored the golden goal in the 108th minute with an own goal following a throw in by the Eagles.

The Terriers (2-1) took the early advantage in the 11th minute when Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez headed the ball into the left corner of the net following a header attempt by Forrest Lasso after a corner kick by Ethan Miller.

Dennis Moore increased the lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute, blasting a shot past Winthrop keeper Enrique Miranda into the lower corner of the goal.

Play was even paced throughout the first half, as both teams took six shots and had one corner kick. The Terriers put four shots on goal in the half, while the Eagles put only one on frame.

Winthrop got on the scoreboard in the 65th minute, as Alex Mantchev put the ball in to the back left corner of the net from just inside the 18 yard box. Assists were credited to Matutu Mpumelelo and Matt Horn.

The Eagles squared things at 2-2 in the 84th minute when Mantchev put in a rebound shot following a shot by Alex Isern that was saved by Wofford keeper Zach Woolever.

The Terriers nearly scored the game-winner in the 87th minute as Moore sent a shot that just sailed over the crossbar.

Both teams battled intensely throughout the first 10-minute overtime period, as both squads had ideal attempts to score the golden goal, yet neither were able to convert.

Miranda picked up the win for Winthrop, earning five saves while facing 20 shots. Woolever got the loss with three saves while facing 15 shots.

Wofford will return to action this Friday evening as they face their third consecutive Big South Conference opponent in Campbell as part of the UNC Wilmington Courtyard by Marriott Tournament in Wilmington, N.C. The match is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start time.
