SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team was defeated by Davidson in their Southern Conference home opener Saturday night by a score of 3-2.  The Terriers drop to 8-5-0 and 2-1-0 in SoCon play this season, while the Wildcats improve 6-6-1 and 2-2-0 in the conference.

Davidson opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Drew Brown’s cross was slotted home by Peter Paras off the right post.  Paras would find the back of the net again in the 20th minute off a free kick from almost 30 yards out to give Davidson a 2-0 lead.  He was able to curve the ball past the wall of Terrier defenders and into the top left corner past Wofford goalkeeper, Andrew Drennan.  The goals were Paras’ second and third of the season.  The Terriers would respond a minute later when Forrest Lasso was able to score with a header off a long throw-in by Billy Padula.  The goal and assist were Lasso’s third and Padula’s seventh respectively.  Wofford nearly tied the score in the 33rd minute when Ryan Hurst fired a knuckling shot towards goal, but Wildcat keeper, Matt Pacifici, was able to block the shot wide.  At the half, Davidson held the edge in shots (8-7) and led 2-1.

Wofford pushed hard to equalize in the second half but were unable to create many chances to test Pacifici.  Davidson, however, would extend their lead to two in the 70th minute on their second shot of the half.  CJ Tikvart sent a free kick towards goal that deflected off the cross bar and was loose inside the penalty area.  Andrew DiLallo was able to possess the ball and score past Drennan from a few yards out.  Wofford would get one goal back in the 76th minute when Chase West scored his first goal of the season from 20 yards out with a shot into the bottom right corner.  With the score 3-2, Wofford continued to apply pressure as they sought their third goal.  However, the Davidson defense and Pacifici were too strong as they were able to hold on to the lead for the final 14 minutes of the game.  Overall, Wofford held the edge in shots (12-10), each team took three corners, but it was the Wildcats who came away with the 3-2 victory.

Andrew Drennan gets the loss for Wofford and falls to 8-5-0 this season.  He recorded three saves on ten shots faced.  Matt Pacifici earned the win for Davidson and improves to 6-6-1 for the year.  He made two saves on 12 shots.

The Terriers return to the pitch on October 17 when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to face the Gamecocks of South Carolina.  The match is set to kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
