Volleyball Topped by Spartans, 3-0

GREENSBORO, N.C –  Wofford volleyball fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-12) at UNCG Saturday night in Fleming Gymnasium in a Southern Conference match.
 
UNCG outhit Wofford .337 to .108 and held an advantage on blocks, 7.5-4.
 
Wofford broke a tie at eight a kill from Amanda Liguori and two kills Wendy Burnett to give the Terriers an early three-point lead, 11-8, in the opening set.  UNCG cut the gap to one point, 12-11, on a kill from Kelsey Sidney, but Burnett answered with a kill and a solo block from Rachel Woodlee to push the lead back to three points 14-11.  The Spartans used kills by Olivia Humphries and Morgan Freeman to spark a 3-0 run and tie the set at 14.  With the score tied at 16, UNCG used a block by Karrian Chambers and Julia Westerbur to spark a 3-0 run and take an 18-15 lead.  Wofford trimmed the lead to one point, 19-18, highlighted by a Taylor Bair kill, but the Spartans responded by pushing the lead back to three points, 21-18, on two Terrier miscues.  The Terriers cut the lead to one point, 22-12, following back-to-back Liguori kills, but the Spartans took the first set, 25-21 following three Wofford errors.
 
In the second set, UNCG held an early two-point lead, 6-4, but Wofford pulled even at seven on kills from Baird and Arden Anderson.  The Spartans answered to regain the two-point lead, 9-7, on a kill and ace by Freeman, only to see the Terriers retie the set at nine two points later.  With the score tied at ten, UNCG went a 4-0 run sparked by a Chambers kills and block by Olivia Humphries and Westerbur give the Spartans a 14-10 lead.  UNCG took control of the set with an 8-2 run as the Spartans went on to claim the second set, 25-14.
 
UNCG came out in the third set with a 12-1 run to take control of the set.  The Spartans never slowed down as they pushed the lead to 12 points, 15-3, but Wofford fought back and trimmed the lead to eight points, 16-8, sparked by a block by Burnett and Woodlee.  UNCG pushed the lead back to ten points, 20-10, as they took the set, 25-12, and the match.
 
Burnett paced Wofford with ten kills and three block assists.  Bekah Dorsey passed out 22 assists and collected ten digs to earn her ninth double-double of the season.
 
Humphries and Chambers led the Spartan attack with 14 kills each.  Ari Lysacek handed out 38 assists, while Kellie Orewiler picked up a match-high 17 digs.
 
Wofford returns to action with a match at Converse College on October 24 at 6 p.m.
