SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-22) to the College of Charleston Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin Johnson Arena in a Southern Conference match.
With the loss, Wofford falls to 14-12 overall and 4-9 in the SoCon, while CofC improves to 20-7 on the season and 11-2 in conference play.
The College of Charleston broke a tie at five in the first set with a 6-0 run highlighted by four aces by Taeler Davis. The Cougars pushed the lead 18-8 en route to a 25-16 opening set win.
Set two saw the Cougars take an early 10-6 lead and hold the lead between three and four points. Down 24-20, Wofford mounted a charge at the set on a kill by Rachel Woodlee and another kill by Wendy Burnett. A Reagan Styles ace pulled cut the lead to one point, 24-13, but the College of Charleston ended the set, 25-23, on kill from Darcy Dorton.
The two teams traded points in the third set, until the Cougars broke a tie at 13 with 4-1 run to take a 17-14 lead. Dorton and Sloane White had kills during the Cougar run. Wofford battled back as they rallied down 20-16 with a 4-1 run to pull within one point, 21-20. However, the College of Charleston took the set, 25-22, as they won four of the final six points to win the match.
Amanda Liguori led Wofford with 11 kills, while Burnett added 1o kills a .389 hitting percentage. Bekah Dorsey handed out 24 assists, while Reagan Styles tied for a match-high with 16 digs.
Dorton paced the Cougars with 14 kills, and Melissa Morello followed with 11 kills and .346 hitting percentage. Davis handed out 38 assists, while Emily Shelton collected 16 digs.
Wofford returns to action Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Benjamin Johnson Arena with The Citadel. Prior to the match Wofford will honor the class of 2013.
