GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Wofford men’s soccer defeated the Furman Paladins 2-1 Saturday night in dramatic fashion to advance to the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship Semifinals in Cary, N.C. Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez scored the game-winning goal for the Terriers in the 83rd minute.
Furman opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Danny Hojaij’s corner found the head of Coleton Henning, who was able to score into the top left corner past Terrier keeper, Andrew Drennan. Wofford would score an equalizer just seven minutes later when Billy Padula and Connor Davis combined on a long thrown-in. Padula sent the ball towards the back post where Davis was able to score with a header past the Paladin goalie, Sven Lissek, into the far corner. Neither team would threaten again in the first half and the teams would head to the locker room tied 1-1. Each team took four shots in the first half while Furman took the only corner kick.
Furman nearly took the lead in the 74th minute on a shot by Michael Gandier that got past Drennan, but Wofford defender Forrest Lasso was there to clear the ball off the goal line to preserve the tie. Wofford would respond and take the lead in the 83rd minute on a great counter attack by the Terriers. Ryan Hurst took the ball down the left side and was able to beat a Furman defender and send a cross into the box. There Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez was able to out jump a Furman player to score with a header past Lissek.
Furman continued to push to score again and nearly found the back of the Terrier net three different times. First in the 85th minute, Furman played a through ball that was just out of Henning’s reach and Drennan was able to dive on it. The Paladins would challenge again in the final 30 seconds but two shots by John Lung’aho were cleared by Terrier defenders to preserve the one goal lead. The game would end 2-1 in favor of Wofford.
Andrew Drennan earned the win for Wofford and improves to 10-8-1 this season. He recorded one save on 13 shots face, but two team saves proved the difference for the Terriers. Sven Lissek gets the loss for Furman and drops to 2-2-0 for the year.
Wofford now advances to the Semifinals of the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship against Appalachian State. The match is set to kick-off at 7:30 p.m. on November 8th at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
