Box Score Box Score

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford men’s soccer team held off Gardner-Webb University for a 2-1 victory Friday Night at Snyder Field.  Alex Hutchins lead the Terriers to the win, scoring two first half goals.  The Terriers improve to 1-1-0 on the year, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs drop to 0-3-0.

Gardner-Webb opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Bryce Wells’ shot was blocked, and Chris Davis was able to knock the rebound past Terrier keeper Andrew Drennan.  Wofford responded in the 30th minute when Ryan Hurst earned a penalty after receiving a beautifully played pass by Turner Almond.  Senior Captain Alex Hutchins calmly walked to the penalty spot and buried a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

Wofford took the lead 12 minutes later on another Hutchins goal assisted by Billy Padula and Forrest Lasso.  Padula used a long throw-in to find Lasso, who headed the ball to Hutchins, who found the back of the net past Runnin’ Bulldog goalie Scott Krotee.  At the break, the Terriers held the edge in shots (13-4) and corners (4-3) on their way to 2-1 half-time lead.

The second half saw both teams create good scoring chances but neither side was able to add to their half-time score.  Each team took six second half shots, with Gardner-Webb taking one more corner kick (3-2).  Play throughout the match was very physical and got chippier as the contest progressed.  By the end, both teams had received two yellow cards but nothing worse.

Andrew Drennan earned the win for the Terriers to improve to 1-1-0 for the season.  Drennan allowed one goal, and recorded five saves on ten shots faced.  Scott Krotee gets the loss for the Runnin’ Bulldogs and falls to 0-3-0 on the year.  Krotee allowed both Terrier goals, and made nine saves on 19 shots.

Both teams will return to the field Sunday for the second leg of the SoCon/Big South Soccer Challenge.  Gardner-Webb will face off against Georgia Southern at 1:00 pm, and the Terriers will face the Winthrop Eagles at 3:30 pm.  Both games will be played at Snyder Field.
