Wofford fans and Spartanburg residents will notice a lot more "sparkle" around town this week as Wofford Sports Marketing has teamed up with 11 area restaurants to celebrate the Terrier football program's four Southern Conference championships this decade.
Locals refer to Spartanburg as "Sparkle City," and as Spartanburg's Team, we felt the community should share in the "sparkle" the Terriers have earned over the last 10 years. To that end, we created these unique shirts that depict Wofford's four Southern Conference championship rings atop the words "Our SPARKLE, Our CITY"
Over 500 shirts have been created and will be worn on various days of the week by the servers and staff at the following Spartanburg restaurants:
Delaney's Irish Pub (Morgan Square)
Dudley's (Fernwood Dr.)
Fuddrucker's (Southport Rd.)
Groucho's Deli (Morgan Square)
Hickory Tavern (Fernwood-Glendale Rd.)
Ike's Korner Grill (Archer Rd.)
Mellow Mushroom (E. Main St.)
The Skillet (Corner of Pine and E. Main)
The Terrace (inside the Spartanburg Marriott)
Wild Ace Pizza (Morgan Square)
Wade's (N. Pine St.)
Additional graphics to include Wofford's four Southern Conference championships won since 2003 in men's basketball (2), men's soccer and baseball have been and placed on new postseason banners currently displayed along Cumming Street on campus. Each banner includes the "Our SPARKLE, Our CITY" tagline. In the coming weeks, the window wrap located at Ben Wofford Books on Church Street will be replaced with similar artwork.
How did Spartanburg become "Sparkle City"?
Spartanburg's nickname draws its origin from a popular late 1950s rockabilly group called "Joe Bennett and the Sparkletones." These four teenagers from nearby Cowpens made appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "American Bandstand" after their hit single "Black Slacks" made it to the Billboard charts in 1957.
