Men’s Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak in Win Over North Florida, 2-0

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomores Charlie Keeley and Connor Davis each scored a goal as the Wofford men's soccer team defeated the University of North Florida 2-0 Saturday evening. With the win, the Terriers extend their six match unbeaten streak, and improve to 5-3-1 overall. The Ospreys fall to 4-2-1 for the season.

Coming into the match, Wofford was ranked ninth in the South Region, while North Florida was ranked one spot ahead in eighth.

In the first half, the Terriers would have the first opportunity in the 17th minute when junior midfielder Carlos Dominguez-Gonzalez had a shot blocked just outside the six-yard box.

The Ospreys would respond and have a great chance to score when Sean Young had his long-range effort saved off the crossbar by Terriers' freshman goalkeeper Garrett Closs in the 20th minute.

Wofford finally got on the board in the 30th minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Dominguez-Gonzalez played it in to Davis, who headed it on to Keeley for the finish inside the six. The game-winning goal was Keeley's first of the season.

The rest of the first half would remain 1-0, with both teams unable to put away any other chances.

In the second half, sophomore midfielder Nestor Jaramillo would create the first Wofford chance of the half when he had a screaming shot from 30-yards just miss past the left post in the 65th minute.

The Terriers would score their second goal of the game in the 70th minute when Davis scored on a header off of senior Billy Padula's long throw-in. For Davis, the goal was his team-leading seventh of the season, and for Padula, the assist was a team-high sixth of the season.

North Florida battled with Wofford in the final minutes, but they were not able to score as the Terriers were victorious for their fifth straight match, 2-0.

For the match, Wofford outshot the Ospreys 19-4, and had a slight edge in the corner battle 3-2.

In goal for the Terriers, Closs earned his second win and his first shutout of the season improving his record to 2-3-0. He faced four shots and made two saves. For North Florida, Brad Sienkiewicz fell to his second loss of the season moving to 4-2-1 overall. He faced 19 Terrier shots and made five saves.

The men's soccer team is back in action on Saturday October 5, when they travel to Georgia Southern University to play in its second Southern Conference match of the season. Kickoff in Statesboro, Georgia will be at 7:00 pm.

The next home match for the Terriers will be on Saturday October 12, when they host Southern Conference foe Elon University on Snyder Field at 7:00 pm.
