Volleyball Overmatched by Undefeated Samford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team was unable to put a dent in Samford's undefeated Southern Conference record, falling in three sets (22-25, 17-25, 15-25) Saturday afternoon at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Wofford's best chance to win a set was the first. A kill by freshman Alex Holland put the Terriers in front 21-19, but Samford put together a 6-1 run to steal it. Bulldog senior Chelsi Carter used her jump serve to shut the door. The 2013 SoCon Libero of the Year broke a 22-all tie with an ace and served out the final three points.

Samford (12-7, 6-0 SoCon) never trailed for an eight-point win in the second. The third was the most lopsided, as the Bulldogs extended their winning streak to eight matches courtesy of a 14-3 run, turning Wofford's (9-12, 2-3 SoCon) 8-7 lead into a runaway.

Bulldog senior Michaela Reesor and sophomore Erin Bognar led all players with 10 kills apiece. Bognar's day was even more impressive, committing zero attack errors and coming up with four blocks. Junior Emily Meitz was also error free with eight kills (.667) and four blocks.

Samford posted its second-highest hitting percentage of the season, outhitting the Terriers .410 to .140. The Bulldogs also held an 11-2 advantage on the block, led by T.J. Russell's match-high six.

For Wofford, freshman Danni Densford had a team-high nine kills and hit .533 (9-1-15). The two-time SoCon Freshman of the Week entered the week as the conference leader in attack percentage (.368) and hit above .500 for the seventh time this season.

Terrier freshman Bella Santoro had seven kills and 10 digs. Senior Taylor Baird posted six kills, followed by Holland with five. On the ground, junior libero Jessica Graham matched Santoro with a team-high 10 digs. Freshman Molly Mayo edged Samford setter Erika Pifer 30-29 in assists and had a match-high three aces. Carter led the match in digs for the Bulldogs with 15.

The Wofford volleyball team welcomes South Carolina State to Benjamin Johnson Arena for a non-conference match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
