GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team was handed a three-set Southern Conference defeat at the hands of Furman (16-25, 11-25, 14-25) Wednesday night at Alley Gym.
Â
The Terriers were down two sets when they took their first lead of the match in the third at 10-9. The brief edge was quickly erased as Furman ended the match on a 16-4 run, winning the third 25-14 to earn a third straight victory.
Â
Andrea Fisher and Ashton Gregory combined for 27 Furman (16-6, 9-2 SoCon) kills, outpacing Wofford's combined total of 25. Fisher led all players with 15 at an impressive .484, while Gregory hit .667 with 12. The Paladins finished the night at .415.
Â
Wofford (11-16, 3-7 SoCon) freshman Danni Densford led the Terrier attack with six kills while hitting .308. Freshman outside Alex Holland also had a half dozen, while senior Taylor Baird and freshman Bella Santoro came in with five apiece.
Â
Unfortunately, Wofford's 25 team kills were negated by 25 attack errors. It made for an attack percentage of .000, marking the team's lowest of the season.
Â
Junior libero Jessica Graham matched Furman freshman Meg DeMaar with a match-high 12 digs. Furman was dominant on the block, earning 13 to Wofford's four.
Â
The loss drops the Terriers from sole possession of seventh to a tie for seventh with Mercer. Meanwhile, Furman remains alone in second, just one game behind first-place Samford (10-1).
Â
Gregory scored four of Furman's first six points, helping the Paladins to an early 6-2 lead. The Terriers clawed back to within a pair at 7-5 on a Liz Buterbaugh ace and Santoro slam, but Furman responded with five straight and capped off an 8-1 run ahead 15-6. Furman's lead grew to as many as nine on several occasions, the final coming at 23-14 before the Paladins closed it out for a one-set lead.
Â
The second set started out close with the Paladins holding a slight 4-3 edge. However, four straight Paladin points ensued and Furman controlled the remainder of the set. Furman went up 10-5 before using a 13-5 run for a commanding 23-10 advantage. The onslaught included three kills by Fisher before Gregory put an end to a 25-11 second, giving Furman a two-set lead.
Â
The third was the closest of the evening. After Furman jumped ahead 9-6, the Terriers put together a 4-0 run to take a 10-9 lead and go on top for the first time. A Buterbaugh kill got it started and senior Kaitlin Farrisi found a hole in the defense for an ace to cap the run and put Wofford on top.
Â
Furman responded quickly. Two straight Wofford errors along with kills by Fisher, Gregory, Jo Wilks and Kasey Holhlen turned the tables back in favor of the Paladins. It was all part of an 8-1 run that burned a Wofford timeout and put Furman on top 17-11.
Â
Wofford continued to spiral as Furman ended the match on a 16-4 run to win the last and sweep the season series.
Â
The Wofford volleyball team returns home on Saturday to take on The Citadel. Match time is slated for 3 p.m. at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
