Women’s Soccer Falters Against Mercer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite a season-high 13 saves for senior keeper Kara Boggs, the Wofford College women's soccer team faltered in a 2-0 loss to the Mercer Bears late in the game on Friday night at Snyder Field.

Boggs' 13 saves were good for tying third best all-time in a single game for the Terriers. Boggs' career high was marked by a 15-save performance last year against UNCG in the Southern Conference tournament. Tonight Boggs returned for her first game since September 14, in which she was sidelined with an injury in a 12-save game at Clemson.

The Terriers held strong on defense for 86 minutes until Mercer's Lauren Gassie hit the game-winning goal. Gassie intercepted the ball from a defender, driving the ball until she got to the 6 yard mark. Gassie found herself one-on-one with Boggs and knocked the ball out of reach into the right side of the net.

Two minutes later, the Bears scored again, with Tess Patton securing the game. Brianna Stampler passed the ball into Patton in the box. The defense tried to shift to block the shot, but Patton struck the ball into the back of the net to insure the win.

The Terriers saw their closest opportunity to score in the 15th minute. Senior defender Mary Kathryn Macklen came inches from striking a header home, forcing a diving save from Mercer keeper Maggie Cropp.

The Terriers were outshot in the match, 27-14. Boggs moves to 3-3-0 on the season, while Cropp earns her seventh win.

Wofford plays again on Sunday, where they take on The Citadel. The team seeks their first Southern Conference win on Snyder Field at 2 p.m.
