Volleyball Falls in Regular Season Finale at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford volleyball team ended the regular season with its fifth straight defeat in a three-set sweep at Samford (23-25, 14-25, 23-25) Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
 
Samford broke a 23-all first-set tie with the final two points to take a one-set lead. A dominating second set put the Bulldogs in front by a pair, but Wofford put up a fight in the third. The Terriers led the majority of the way until Samford grabbed the lead late. Wofford hung on to tie the final frame at 22 before the home team tallied three of the final four points for the sweep.
 
The Bulldogs had a significant advantage in the serve game, helping them edge out the close sets. They combined for eight aces while Wofford had eight serving errors to just one ace.
 
The loss drops Wofford's record to 12-21, 4-12 SoCon. The Terriers will be the No. 8 seed in next weekend's Southern Conference Tournament and play No. 9 seed The Citadel in the first round at 9:30 a.m.
 
Samford (17-12, 11-5 SoCon) ends the regular season tied for second place in the league standings. The win snapped the Bulldogs' four-game losing streak.
 
Senior Michaela Reesor led all players with 16 kills on a dominating .538 hitting percentage. The SoCon Player of the Year candidate also posted four aces to finish with a match-high 20 points and led a Samford attack that outhit Wofford .358 to .262. Emily Meitz was also impressive with nine kills (.615).
 
Senior Taylor Baird had another good game on the attack for the Terriers. Playing in her final regular season contest, the Blythewood native tallied a team-high 11 kills and hit .526. Freshman middle Danni Densford joined in with an error-free eight kills (.667).
 
Senior Kaitlin Farrisi went for a career-high 11 digs in what was also her final regular season match in a Terrier uniform. She bested Samford's Chelsi Carter by one to lead all players.
 
The Southern Conference Tournament will be held Friday, Nov. 22 through Sunday Nov. 24 at UNCG's Fleming Gymnasium.
